Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Silver spots in the shade! The Cevennensis Lungwort (Pulmonaria longifolia 'Cevennensis') is a clump-forming Lungwort that is valued by gardeners for its attractive silver-speckled foliage! This native to the Cévennes cultural region and range of mountains in south-central France features very long and narrow spotted leaves that look gorgeous throughout the entire growing season!
Spring brings drooping clusters that rise in an airy fashion above the foliage on dainty stems, forming a bunch of funnel-shaped blooms in dark violet-blue! Bees (especially bumblebees), butterflies, and the occasional curious Hummingbird will arrive to sip their nectar from April to May. The curious little blooms can sometimes have an array of violet to dark purple, to bluish-purple as the flowers open and age, giving them a multi-hued effect!
Growing just 1-2 feet in height and spreading 2-3 feet wide, these tidy clumps can spread and politely fill small areas in the shade. Spreading slowly by creeping rhizomatic roots, these are easy plants to care for and keep in bounds.
Planting and Application:
Lungwort has a long history in gardens and even has medicinal qualities, finding itself in herb gardens and potager plantings since the sixteenth century! These easy-care perennial plants happily ramble and fill the dappled shade with silvery spotted beauty, are gorgeous plants for edging and as speckled facer plants. Frequently used as a groundcover and garden filler.
Even container gardens in the shade welcome these charming old-world plants! Cottage gardens, mixed perennial borders, and moist wildflower gardens in the shade are where these plants like to set down their roots. Try pairing Cevennensis with Jack Frost Brunnera, Waterslide Hosta, Midnight Rose Coral Bells, and Hennie Graafland Astilbe for a pretty effect in the shade garden!
- Clusters of Funnel-Shaped Blooms Ranging From Violet to Purple to Blue!
- Striking Lance-Shaped Leaves in Deep Green & Speckled Silver
- Small Clumping/Spreading Perennial

- Edging, Specimens, Containers & All Round Shade-Garden Jewels!
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Lungwort Cevennensis is easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in part shade to full shade, but it prefers cool soils that are moist and humusy. It can handle slightly drier conditions in full shade and in its cooler climate range of USDA growing zones 3 to 8. But in warmer climates, Pulmonaria needs rich, moist soil and full shade. Best in neutral to alkaline soils, Lungworts are very adaptable herbaceous perennials!
This variety of Lungwort is very tolerant of wet, poorly drained soils, so it must have constant moisture and not be allowed to dry out. Just ensure they do not sit in water that has become stagnant or they will rot. All plants appreciate a 3-4 inch thick layer of arborist bark chips to hold in moisture and keep their roots cool.
These low-maintenance plants, simply trim off the blooms after they fade and then trim back the entire plant when it dies back after frost in the autumn; removing all the leaves and debris from the area to keep slugs and snails at bay. Every 3-5 years or so, divide your clumps to prevent them from overcrowding in the autumn.
