Live in Growing Zones 9, 10, or 11 and want a Fig Tree that will stand up to heat and humidity? Fall in love with the LSU Purple Fig Tree (Ficus carica 'LSU Purple') and its gorgeous foliage and succulent fruit! Not just one crop, but LSU Purple produces three distinct crops each year: a light crop on old wood in early spring, a heavy main crop during the summer, and a fall crop that can persist into December!

The curious green summer blooms won't look like much or smell great, but your bees, and butterflies will stop by for a visit just the same. No need for another Fig Tree anywhere in the area either, since LSU Purple is self-pollinating making for easy edible landscaping without sacrificing space!

Developed by experts at Louisiana State University, LSU Purple Fig grows 8-12 feet in height and width, creating a round shrubby tree that can be pruned smaller as needed. You can even remove the lower branching and expose the multi-stemmed trunk to create a small ornamental tree for something a little more formal!

Planting and Application:

Dangling among the lobed Mediterranean foliage, the modified stems become beautiful, glossy deep-purple fruits that have strawberry-colored flesh. Featuring a subtle yet delightful flavor, with a high sugar content, the fruit is wonderful eaten fresh, dried, or used to bak and make preserves.

The tree is beautiful in its own right, so go ahead and use this tropical plant and its lovely foliage as a front or back yard specimen, in-ground or container accent and shade plant around your sunny patio, or in groupings as screening shrubs with the bonus of fruit! Potted Fig trees look great around the barbecue pit or provide shade around the pool!

  • Glossy Dark Purple Figs Three Times A Year!
  • Closed Eye Fig
  • Lobed Green Foliage
  • Multi-Stemmed Rounded Form
  • Sweet & Subtle Flavor - Fresh, Dried, Baked & Preserves
  • Gorgeous Specimen, Container Accent & Edible Gardening in the Sun!

#ProPlantTips for Care

Heat and sun-loving, Fig Trees need well-drained soil with moderate moisture access to support their growth and fruiting. Provide this prolific fruit tree with regular fertility to keep the three crops a year going strong!

Protect this Fig Tree from frost and cold by bringing it indoors or covering in zone 9 if there is any chance it is going to freeze. In USDA zone 8, Figs will die back to the ground substantially but rebound in the spring. USDA zone 8 and lower container growers can also transition their container trees indoors before winter. Inside, provide bright indirect sunlight. Potted Figs that have gone dormant in cooler climates, need to be kept in an insulated, unheated, cool and dark area with minimal water to prevent the roots from drying out completely.

Prune your Fig Tree in late winter or early spring before it starts to grow. LSU Purple has been praised for its ability to ward off pests and diseases, and deer seldom bother this plant either!

  • Full Sun!
  • Regular Moderate Moisture Access
  • Needs Regular Fertility
  • Enriched Well-Drained Soil
  • Prune When Dormant
  • Pest, Disease & Deer Resistant
