#ProPlantTips for Care:

Butterfly Bush grows well in medium to dry soil but won't thrive in wet conditions. Plant this shrub in full sun and in a very well-drained location. Provide regular moisture for new shrubs but once established, your Butddleia will only need supplemental moisture during the worst of drought and hottest summer months to keep the blooms returning. Provide a 3-4 inch deep layer of arborist mulch to support your shrub's root system.

And luckily, you won't have to work too hard to enjoy these reblooming blossoms! You don't need to prune your Lo and Behold® Blue Chip Butterfly Bush or deadhead it. You will want to cut these plants back to the ground before spring, when grown in colder climates; acting more like an herbaceous perennial. For plants grown in warm growing zones, these woody shrubs only need an early spring trim will help ensure the best performance and best flowers. Like most butterfly favorites, this deciduous plant is drought tolerant and not on any deer's menu of favorite snacks.

  • Full Sun Shrub/Perennial
  • Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate Moisture & Fertility
  • Prune to Ground Early Spring
  • Non-Invasive & Salt-Tolerant & Deer-Resistant

I have placed 2 blue chip butterfly bushes in containers that sit at my townhouse entryway. I get asked all the time about what kind of plant that is? Just perfect for a container.

I have placed 2 blue chip butterfly bushes in containers that sit at my townhouse entryway. I get asked all the time about what kind of plant that is? Just perfect for a container.

Hello De D.,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Lo & Behold® Blue Chip Butterfly Bush! We’re absolutely thrilled to hear that these stunning bushes are not only flourishing in your containers but also drawing such curiosity from visitors—what a wonderful compliment to your entryway. Their compact size and beautiful blooms truly make them an ideal choice for container gardening.

If you haven’t already, be sure to rotate the containers occasionally to ensure even sunlight and maintain airflow around the plants. Also, regularly deadheading spent blooms can encourage even more vibrant flowering. For container plants like these, using a well-draining potting mix and watering when the top inch of soil feels dry will keep your Blue Chip Butterfly Bushes happy and healthy. Should you want to provide a bit of extra enrichment, container-friendly slow-release fertilizer in spring can make a big difference in their longevity.

If you ever want to explore companions for the butterfly bushes — perhaps plants that enjoy a similar sun exposure and watering routine — we’re happy to provide recommendations. Your container display sounds like a beautiful and inviting space!
