Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 3-8
You're not looking for showy flowers. You're not looking for high maintenance. You're looking for a classically shaped tree to give you some shade in the summer. A tree that keeps looking good without pruning and doesn't require any upkeep on your weekends!
Let us introduce you to the Littleleaf (Little Leaf) Linden Tree (Tilia cordata)! This tree has been a staple in American neighborhoods for generations and in European streetscapes for centuries! Naturally shaped like a rounded pyramid, Little Leaf adds a definite sense of scale and proportion to your yard.
The glossy, smaller dark green leaves are heart-shaped and grow densely, making this an exceptional shade tree! As a rule, shade trees don't have very interesting flowers or a scent, but this hardy Little-Leaf Linden is the exception to the rule! The small yellowish, fizzy bell-shaped flowers appear in June and smell wonderful!
Small, round seeds are also produced, and their flower bracts persist well into winter and the leaves stay green on the tree longer than many others before turning yellow in the autumn. Very cold-tolerant through USDA planting zones 3 to 8, Lindens, also known as Basswood, have widely been used as prized honey sources, lumber, and even medicine!
Planting and Application:
Like other heart-shaped leafed trees, the foliage of Lindens adds white noise and a shimmering motion to the landscape as they wave in the breeze! It's just an extra layer of enjoyment as you sit beneath the lush shade in the summer months!
Linden is well-known for its regal presence in the landscape. This stately tree makes a substantial impact on a large landscape. Little Leaf laughs off pollution better than most, which is why it makes such a great street tree and front yard lawn specimen in cities, and it's the perfect tree for urban gardens!
Keep the limbs growing to the ground for lush screening throughout the summer, or raise the canopy so you can walk under their limbs, Linden trees will add curb appeal and lower your cooling bill! Add a reading chair or seating area beneath the limbs and watch as the bees work diligently to collect Basswood honey and pollen!
- Dense Heart-Shaped Foliage
- Yellowish Bell-Shaped Fragrant Blossoms With Light Green 'Wings'
- Fat Pyramidal Canopy
- Wildlife Appeal
- Bees & Pollinators Love The Nectar & Pollen
- Urban Environment-Friendly Street & Shade Tree & Lawn Specimen
#ProPlantTips for Care:
The Little Leaf Linden grows best in full sun, at least 6 hours of sun a day. Linden tolerates all kinds of soils, including clay as long as it is well-drained. New trees need regular moisture their first year or so in the ground and become very drought tolerant once established. Provide a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch around the loot system to protect them from heat and cold, and protect the trunk from mower damage. Prune if needed in the late winter or early spring.
- Full Sun Deciduous Trees
- Well-Drained Soil - Tolerates Clay
- Moderate to Low Moisture Needs
- Prune When Dormant
- Appreciates Mulched Beds
- Very Low-Maintenance & Easy Going Trees
