Heavenly fragrant and dreamy white bells, the Lily of the Valley (Convallaria majalis) is a fragrant white spreading plant that sends up graceful arches of dainty bell-shaped flowers in spring! Each arching stem is weighed down by the profuse blooms it carries. The fragrant flowers are followed by glossy orangy-red berries in late summer to fall.

Broad oval, pointed green leaves are the perfect backdrops for the arching 6-8 inch tall flowering stems full of long dangling blossoms. Butterflies will stop by for a visit and you'll be treated to bees and fat bumblebees trying to wriggle into each little bell to sip the nectar!

A slow but aggressive spreader, Lily of the Valley adds a bit of elegance and charm to shade-prone areas of any landscape! These plants have been around since 1000 B.C. and are often found near old foundations, where they proved more durable than the houses they were planted around! Hardy perennials throughout USDA growing zones 3 through 9, Convallaria loves moist soil and less than 6 hours of sun a day.

Planting and Application:

Once it becomes established, Lily of the Valley plants are long-lived and spread slowly through its rhizomes called 'pips'. Filling areas in bold green leaves and heavenly-scented little blossoms. No shade garden should be without some! Plant rows and groupings to provide all the home perfuming blooms your vases can handle!

Shady containers and planters, in any tight area that needs to be filled, or bare spots in the dappled shade of larger trees and shrubs, are all perfect for these fragrant blooms! Plant among your shady bulb gardens, beneath and around Roses or around other perennials to act as living mulch and groundcover!

  • White Bell-Shaped Flowers
  • Extremely Fragrant Blooms & Slender Stems
  • Vertical Green Broad Leaves
  • Dense Spreading Groundcover
  • Groupings & Rows, Shade Gardens & Containers

#ProPlantTips for Care:

This perennial rhizome thrives in moist, humus-rich, fertile soil, in partial sun or full shade. The more sun there is, however, the more important it is for the soil to remain moist. Drought tolerant in shaded areas, it's best to apply a 3-4 inch layer of mulch to help with soil moisture and insulation. Plant in an area with good air circulation to prevent fungal spots on the petals. Deadhead after flowers fade but leave the foliage to make food for the rhizomes. Prune down to the ground when leaves turn yellow. Divide clumps every 3-5 years if needed.

  • Thrives Partial Sun To Full Shade
  • Best In Moist Locations With Mulch
  • Well-Drained Fertile Soil
  • Aggressive But Not Invasive
  • Deer & Rabbit Resistant

Heavenly little bells of incredible beauty and fragrance, the elegant little Lily of the Valley will fill your garden (and bouquets) with pretty blooms! Order these quality rhizomes and more at NatureHills.com for shipping at the proper planting time in your growing zone!

Of all the flowers in the garden, the Lily of the Valley is my most beloved. I grew up waiting for them to bloom at the side of our house every spring. This is one of my most treasure memories of my grandparents home when I was growing up.Whenever I smell a Lily of the Valley I am transported back in time to a time when things were more kind and loving.

We ordered 15 plants. 14 lived and 1 died. They are healthy and growing well. Seem very happy. They did bloom very fragrant flowers in the spring which was wonderful. Happy with them. Recommended. Hope they live through our Winter.

Dear RunRabbitRun,

Thank you so much for sharing your lovely experience with your Lily of the Valley plants! We’re thrilled to hear that 14 of them are thriving and that their fragrant spring blooms brought you joy—that wonderfully sweet scent is truly a special reward. Sorry to hear that one didn’t make it; sometimes, despite our best efforts, a single plant can be more sensitive, but it sounds like your Garden is looking fabulous overall!

To help ensure your lilies survive the winter, gently mulch around the base of the plants to protect the roots from freezing temperatures and harsh winds. They are generally hardy but suddenly severe winters might impact them, so some added protection goes a long way. Also, avoiding heavy watering before a deep freeze can prevent root damage.

If you have any questions about seasonal care or need advice as your plants settle in for winter, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re always happy to assist!

Dear Run R.,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your Lily of the Valley plants! We’re delighted to hear that 14 of your 15 plants are thriving and that their fragrant spring blooms brought you joy—that sweet scent truly is one of the best parts of these lovely plants. We’re sorry to hear that one did not make it, but overall it sounds like your batch is healthy and well on its way to establishing a beautiful patch in your garden.

As winter approaches, be sure to mulch around the base of your Lily of the Valley plants. A good layer of organic mulch will help regulate soil temperature and protect those roots from harsh freezes. Also, since these plants prefer partial shade and moist, well-drained soil, continuing to monitor moisture levels—even in winter—will give them the best chance to emerge happily in spring.
