With this distinguished pedigree, President Grevy Lilac (Syringa vulgaris 'President Grevy') certainly earns a spot in discerning landscapes. President Grevy Lilac grows into a showy standout, with flowers held on enormous, vertical panicles of flowers. You'll be thrilled with their intoxicating true Lilac scent for weeks on end! Garden professionals know to ask for this special heirloom Lilac by name. But even newbies can keep this shrub alive with regular water and a lot of sunshine!

President Grevy Lilac is well-known the world over for its spectacular flowers. Buds begin a darker shade of blue and open into an ornamental double iced pale lavender blue. This two-toned effect brings enormous visual depth to your spring plantings. Butterflies come to call daily, working over each flower in the large bloom. You'll lose count of the flying visitors, but never lose sight of the fact that this nectar-rich choice supports your local ecology.

The foliage has a soft, elegant appearance, even when the magnificent blooms have faded. With multiple stems, this crisp, clean ornamental shrub features beautiful, heart-shaped, blue-green leaves. They grow thickly on the skyward-reaching branches.

Lilacs have been cultivated since the 1500s, and this wonderfully upright variety has graced gardens since 1886. Grow your own, and gather armloads for cut flower arrangements each year. But even newbies can keep this shrub alive with regular water and a lot of sunshine!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

With only limited care requirements, you will easily grow these low-maintenance shrubs! Select a planting site in full sun, where it receives at least six hours of direct sunlight. It will tolerate light shade, but the flowering is best in full sun. Well-drained soil is a must, too. If you see puddles long after a rainfall, simply elevate your plants in a mound of additional soil 18 inches high by three feet wide. Give young plants a regular schedule of medium water. Once their roots are established in your soil, you can go longer between waterings.

Mulch helps your plants stay cool and moist. Apply to a depth of three inches, then pull it away six inches from the stems. Apply supplemental water during times of extended drought. If you live with deer in your area, apply repellent spray on planting day. Deer are hungry and curious, and you want to train them to leave your plants alone. Reapply according to the label.

Air circulation is important for Lilacs, so find a breezy place for them to perform at their best. It's best to avoid low spots or heavily enclosed locations that trap airflow. Fertilize in early spring and again in mid-summer with Dr. Earth Organic and All Purpose Fertilizer, following directions on the package.

Don't miss a single bloom! Follow these easy Pruning steps for the best flowering:

Right after the flowers are done, it's time to prune. Don't delay, as Lilacs will produce next year's flowers on the new growth from this year. President Grevy can handle heavy pruning. Snip the past flowers, then remove inward-heading branches and the thickest stems out at ground level. The goal is to let the interior of the shrub have plenty of sunlight and air circulation.

Once your Lilac plants have been growing for about 10 years, you'll want to start a regular schedule of renewal pruning and removal of suckers (when needed). After the blooms are fading, cut a few of the oldest, thickest branches right down to the ground each year. The younger, thinner branches remain and keep your plant vigorous and healthy.

Renewal pruning is great for your Lilac shrub. Removing the oldest growth lets the new branches take their turn. The youngest branches will produce the best bloom for you the following spring. Prune to keep an open interior to reduce the chances of powdery mildew.
