Leyland Cypress Tree for Fast Privacy

  • Fast-Growing
  • Hardy
  • Lovely Natural Color and Shape

If you are on the search for a massive, gorgeous living fence that will give you a wonderful sense of privacy on a large lot, take a look at one of the most popular selection of evergreen trees, Leyland Cypress.

Leyland Cypress (x Cupressocyparis leylandii) is a tree prized for its fast-growing nature and lovely form. You'll love it's perfect shape when left to grow in its natural conical growth habit.

Or, you can choose to shear it to keep it at the height you want. It will happily accept you trimming it to almost any shape or size. This gives a formal look to the garden that brings to mind stately English manors.

Why waste money and maintenance time on a privacy fence when you can use the Leyland Cypress as a carefree, living one?

As if the Leyland Cypress tree isn't impressive enough for its growth and hardiness, it will also be a particularly beautiful evergreen for your yard. It maintains a lovely bluish-green color, with a uniform upright shape. All the limbs grow outward in a pyramidal fan shape.

If you live in an area that gets ice or wind, a better choice for you is the Green Giant Arborvitae.

For all other climates, if you need a fast-growing, low-maintenance privacy screen, the Leyland Cypress is your tree. Order today!

How to Use Leyland Cypress in the Landscape

Use on large lots with wide open spaces for best results. As a hedgerow plant, plant trees 8 to 10 feet apart "on center", measuring from trunk to trunk.

Use this tree for screening, or to define a border or property line. Each tree has a uniform look, and is cloaked in green from top to bottom. Simply beautiful!

Remember, the larger (and older) plants available on our site will give you faster results in your landscape. When in doubt, go bigger!

The versatile Leyland Cypress can be pruned aggressively to make a thick dense screen to block an unwanted view. It takes very well to shearing into a formal hedge and can be maintained with power hedging tools.

Use a single tree as an amazing "Christmas Tree" specimen accent, but don't plant it at the same depth as your lawn. It needs very fast-draining soil.

In urban areas, this tree takes pollution and thrives in higher humidity and areas of high rainfall and coastal salt spray. Take care to provide good air circulation, and avoid planting it too near paved areas, or walls.

#ProPlantTips for Care

Leyland Cypress need care to get them established. The garden adage "First year, they sleep, second year they creep and third year they leap" could have been written about the Leyland Cypress.

However, once it gets established in your landscape, this tree can grow up to 3 - 4 feet a year and can reach 50 feet in less than 20 years. In this case, a little patience definitely pays off.

Site the Leyland Cypress tree properly for the best result. Give it full sun, and proper watering to ensure it thrives with good health. Midday and afternoon sun is best. Site the tree so it receives at least 6 hours of full sun.

Once established, they are moderately drought tolerant in areas of high humidity and won't need to be on an automatic irrigation system. Keep your eye on them, and supplement with deep watering as needed.

In the dryer parts of zones 9 and 10, the Leyland Cypress should be mulched to keep the root system cool in the hot summer.

Best practice is to water plants deeply once a week to a depth of twelve to eighteen inches to encourage the shallow roots to grow deeper. Soaker hoses or drip irrigation is definitely recommended, as you'll be able to simply turn it on and let it run. You'll water the roots, and not the leaves and branches. Saturate around the entire perimeter of the soil.

Plant the tree in well-drained soil, as the roots won't tolerate standing water. Instead, "plant it high" for the best drainage.

Once the hole is dug, add large handfuls of pine bark soil conditioner and compost to your native soil backfill and mix.

Before planting, prep the plant by loosening the roots a bit. Gently tug at the roots, so they'll grow outward into the surrounding soil.

As you plant it, leave about 2 inches of the container soil showing above ground. Then, mulch in a large ring all around the tree. Take care not to let the mulch touch the trunk.

While your tree is young, prune any branches that cross and rub together.

Order your Leyland Cypress today and get started on that gorgeous privacy screen!

Super Fast Growing!

I was so bummed to learn it's a little too warm in my zone for the Green Giants but one of Nature Hills reps pointed me to the Leylands.I am so glad she did!We planted 3 foot Leyland Cypress in spring and I swear they have grown a ton this season.Blocking neighbors = Priceless which makes Nature Hills Nursery my hero! Thanks so much for quick shipping of healthy, beautiful trees that have taken off.

Dear Hope,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with your Leyland Cypress trees! We’re delighted to hear that our team was able to guide you to the perfect alternative when Green Giants weren’t the best fit for your zone. It’s fantastic that your three-foot Leylands have already flourished this fast—nothing beats the joy of a natural privacy screen adding to your space and blocking those neighbors just as you hoped.

If you ever find you want to encourage even more robust growth, mulching around the base and consistent deep watering (especially in warmer months) can help keep your Leylands thriving. Also, a balanced fertilizer in early spring could maintain their fantastic vigor. Don’t hesitate to reach out for care tips or anything else you might need—we love supporting your green projects!
