#ProPlantTips for Care:
If given proper care, sun, fertilizer and well-draining soil, you will have a wonderful Citrus Tree that is simply beautiful. With its gorgeous variegated leaves and very fragrant white blossoms, this is the ultimate ornamental edible!
Citrus Trees are full sun plants, needing a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. More sun means stronger growth, more flowers, and therefore more fruit! Preferring morning sun to dry the leaves of dew, these plants also like good air circulation to keep the foliage healthy.
Citrus need very well-drained soils that don't hold excess moisture. Mound up your planting area if you suspect poor drainage and container plants need deep planters with plenty of drainage holes. They also prefer their soil on the acidic side.
Let these plants dry out slightly between waterings and never allow their roots to sit in water. Plants in containers will not need much water during their dormant winter indoors. Citrus trees will not tolerate standing water, so please don't overwater.
Protecting Container Citrus From Cold
Although it's famous for growing in warmer regions, it can also thrive in colder areas as long as the tree is brought indoors prior to the first frost of winter.
If you're growing these tropical trees in the ground in the lowest of their favored growing zones, they need to be planted in a sheltered spot to avoid the worst of the chill. If a spot like that is unavailable, then you are better off planting in a large, deep container.
In borderline growing zones, begin slowly acclimating your tree indoors or into a protected location, eventually moving your tree inside in bright indirect sun for the winter if the temperatures in your area ever dip below that 40°F range. In spring, reverse this process and begin acclimating your tree to again be back out in the full sun all summer. This reduces stress and leaf drop.
- Hardy in zones 9-11. Below zone 9, plant in a container & bring it indoors for the winter
- Full Sun, Moderate Moisture & Fertile Well-Drained Soil
- Citrus Pruning is best done in late winter
- Set up a consistent Fertilizing schedule

Healthy, Edible and Ornamental Variegated Pink Lemon
Variegated Pink Lemon (Citrus x limon) is a bud sport of a regular Eureka lemon that was discovered in a tree in the backyard of D.W. Field in Burbank California in the late 1920s. With its variegated dark green leaves with creamy white edges, this sport must have stood out against the total dark green leaves of its parents, the Eureka Lemon.
Pay attention to seedlings that sprout in your backyard. They are rare, but it's not uncommon to see variegated foliage. Oftentimes, this genetic trait isn't stable, which means it's only visible on young trees. Variegation frequently disappears as these seedlings mature into older trees.
Other qualities came to light as D.W. Field monitored his unique backyard find. For instance, the fruit that the sport produced was also variegated with cream yellow and green stripes and the tasty, pink flesh of the fruit was most intriguing.
D.W. Fields then brought budwood to U.C. Riverside in 1931 where it underwent trials by the noted plant physiologist, A.C. Shamel, who at that time was focused on improving Citrus Fruit for the commercial and home gardeners. The unique qualities of the Variegated Pink Lemon were obvious to Dr. Shamel.
He noted that the tree is less vigorous than a typical Eureka Lemon tree, and the stripes on the skin of the fruit would fade as it matured, but the pink-colored flesh remained. He also noted was that the fruit had very few seeds and hung on the tree almost year-round.
Variegated Pink Lemon has been marketed under a number of names through the years, including the Pink Lemonade, Panache Lemon, Variegated Eureka Lemon and Zebra Lemon. The fruit is a great source of the standard citrus nutrients: Vitamin C, Calcium, and Lycopene which contributes to the pink-colored flesh.
It is only the flesh that is pink, however. The juice is nearly colorless.
The Variegated Pink Lemon has become a popular selection for citrus growers around the world. It is recognized as a valuable citrus fruit that is popular with farmers market growers. It's also a wonderful focal point in the home garden as a beautiful edible ornamental.
