Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Beautiful broadleaf evergreen Ponderosa Lemon Tree (Citrus x limon 'Ponderosa') produces large yellow fruit reminiscent of its Pomelo parentage while the flavor is all Lemon! Each fruit can be as large as a grapefruit and feature a pale yellow, thick bumpy rind that offers bountiful zest!
The clouds of fragrant white flowers and the citrusy scent of the leaves and fruit make this ornamental a very fragrant showpiece! You'll certainly wish to keep this tree close so you can enjoy its perfume! Standing out among the glossy foliage, the green-to-yellow fruit hangs heavy once ripe. This hybrid Lemon has an added bonus - it flowers year-round so you could potentially get fruit ripening all year long when grown outdoors in optimal conditions!
Though they can take their time ripening, you'll enjoy a long harvest season and can take your time using your crop for all your favorite recipes! Both sweet and savory dishes, jelly and preserves, drinks and flavoring, or as garnish and zest, you'll have a lot of lemon flavor to go around!
Planting and Application:
These are mid-sized trees that can be maintained smaller for small space gardens or patio planters, or let grow into glorious shade trees and accents! Plant one outside a frequently passed window or by a favorite outdoor chair to always enjoy the fragrance, and shade, and watch your developing fruit as they form!
Plant as a tropical houseplant in an indirectly sunny window or bright porch, enabling cold climate gardeners to enjoy these great trees by bringing them indoors for the winter.
Either as a lovely specimen tree with the lower limbs removed to expose the trunk or as a bushy shrub form with the limbs held to the ground, Citrus trees are prominent edible landscaping accents! The evergreen foliage acts as fruitful and fragrant privacy hedges, shade trees, or even property divisions with a healthy perk!
- Great landscape trees that look amazing year-round
- Large greenish-yellow fruit
- Gleaming and fragrant white flowers year-round
- Use in containers and garden, indoors and out
- Full, compact growing broadleaf evergreen
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Citrus trees prefer full-sun locations with great air circulation. Also preferring a very well-drained site with ample fertility and moderate to low moisture. Keep your Ponderosa Lemon tree happy and healthy with a regular fertilizer routine and protection from any and all chill.
Protecting Container Citrus From Cold
Although it's famous for growing in warmer regions, it can also thrive in colder areas as long as the tree is brought indoors prior to the first frost of winter.
If you're growing these tropical trees in the ground in the lowest of their favored growing zones, they need to be planted in a sheltered spot to avoid the worst of the chill. If a spot like that is unavailable, then you are better off planting in a large, deep container.
In borderline growing zones, begin slowly acclimating your tree indoors or into a protected location, eventually moving your tree inside in bright indirect sun for the winter if the temperatures in your area ever dip below that 40°F range. In spring, reverse this process and begin acclimating your tree to again be back out in the full sun all summer. This reduces stress and leaf drop.
- Full sun and enriched soil that dries out between waterings
- Prune in late winter to maintain at any size and open the canopy to sun and air
- Provide regular fertilizer
