Elegant lavender flowers from summer to fall! The Lavender Chiffon® Rose of Sharon Shrub (Hibiscus syriacus 'Notwoodone') is a deciduous shrub with ornamental features. Masses of fully double 3 to 4-inch blooms appear in late summer. Each large, single lavender flower is adorned with a lacy center to create an anemone-like bloom.

Also known as Althea and related to Tropical and Hardy Hibiscus, your Lavender Chiffon® Rose of Sharon is one of the longest-blooming and most prolific of the Hibiscus varieties! The lovely green foliage is the perfect backdrop for the blooms and for other plants planted nearby. The individual flowers last only a day or so, but more flowers continue to bloom from summer to fall. The 4-inch long, 3-lobed leaves fill out your Lavender Chiffon® nicely, adding to its elegant appearance for your yard!

Pollinators and even a few hummingbirds are eager to seek out these blooms, which arrive during the summer and autumn when other plants are not blooming. It presents a stately presence in your yard with its upright, multi-stemmed, vase shape and impressive blooms. The Proven Winners® team is known for high performance. Now is your chance to order commercial-grade quality plants that have been expertly grown by the Nature Hills team!

Planting and Application:

This shrub works well with many architectural styles. It lends an easy-breezy, Shabby Chic visual appeal to your landscape. Make your space work for you! This shrub is poised, pretty, and fun. These can also be grown as container plants for your porch or patio. Lavender Chiffon® can even be pruned into a small tree if you'd like to add a creative touch.

A single specimen plant would look outstanding in your perennial bed, or plant several for an eye-catching hedge and screening! Partner these useful shrubs with hotly colored perennials to amplify the impact. Or add them as a serene backdrop to other cool-toned blue and violet blooms. Several planted together look amazing at the back of the border or along your fence line.

Plant Lavender Chiffon® on the sunny side of evergreens to soften their look. Or, count on their densely held branches to give you privacy, even during the winter months. Lavish flowering hedges will pump up your privacy, and create "living walls" of a garden room. A single one becomes a magnificent accent plant. You'll love your private new getaway.

Place four feet apart on center, measuring from the center of one to the center of the next. You can also plant a staggered, zigzagging double row that will fill in very quickly. Use several of them to create walls of a secluded seating area in a little-used side yard.

  • Extra-Large, Lavender Single Blooms Have Lacy Centers
  • Almost Completely Seedless
  • Butterflies, Bees & Hummingbirds Love the Nectar-Rich Blooms
  • Starts Blooming When Other Shrubs are Done for the Season
  • Upright, Rounded Form & Pretty Branching Structure Looks Great All Year!
  • Grow it in Large Containers for a Private Balcony for Years
  • Gracious, Stylish Flowering Privacy Hedge

#ProPlantTips for Care:

This deciduous shrub prefers full sun and is both disease and pest resistant. Overall, this is one tough plant and is able to maintain itself through good and poor weather alike. It grows in any soil, unless extremely wet or dry, and appreciates a mulched growing bed. This easy-care plant is a perfect choice, whether you are a beginner or have years of landscaping experience. Provide a moderate amount of water on a regular basis, and use a three-inch layer of arborist mulch over the top of the root system to keep them nice and cool. Apply a slow-release fertilizer designed for flowering plants at the same time. Follow application rates on the label.

Colder growing zones actually hinder seed production, making this plant nearly sterile. Use Lavender Chiffon® anywhere in your yard without worrying about nuisance seedlings. However, in warmer regions, these can be a bit messy because they have so many seedlings that sprout nearby. Simply deadhead your shrub after flowers fade and remove those seedheads before they mature to combat this.

This pretty shrub blooms on new wood. Prune Althea in early spring to either shape or control the height. You'll have flowers later that season, no matter how tightly you trim them in spring. You can even train these shrubs into multi or single-stemmed tree forms! Renewal prune every 3-5 years to maintain vigor. Apply a slow-release fertilizer designed for flowering plants at the same time. Follow application rates on the label.

Tree Form vs. Shrub Form

The details make all the difference in a garden. At Naturehills.com, we understand that little things like what form a plant is can greatly impact how you plan your landscape. So before you buy, don’t forget to check which form you’re getting.

Tree Form:

These are plants that have one stem coming from the ground. Plants can also be considered single stem when lower branches are removed to raise the height of the branching to a more desired height. Sometimes, you will hear a tree form referred to as a single stem.

Shrub Form:

These are bushy plants with many stems and branchings close to the ground. They are referred to as shrubs or bushes and are often shorter than their tree forms.

This lavender flowered hibiscus bush or tree mysteriously appeared in my lawn close to three years ago and after the untimely murder/death of my only granddaughter who shared a birthday with me, which is today. Not until yesterday, did I know the name of it when a friend visiting told me it was called the Rose of Sharon. A beautiful full blown non troublesome bush that come back every spring with lavender blooms. I know not how it got here unless by a greater power. A neigbor tried to tell me it was a weed. It is now a full blown tree. Lovely.

Dear Gerri,
