Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Provide at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sun daily. Full sun is essential for the most intense red color and to keep the stems from becoming floppy or reaching for light.
  • Soil: Select a spot with excellent drainage because this plant will not survive "wet feet" during the winter. If you have heavy clay soil, plant it in a raised bed or a slight mound to ensure water moves away from the roots.

Watering Requirements

Water your new Hyssop twice a week during its first growing season to help the root system move deep into the soil. Once established, it is remarkably drought tolerant and only requires supplemental water during prolonged dry spells. If watering is too frequent or the soil stays soggy, the plant will likely suffer from root rot and show yellowing leaves.

Pruning Tips

This plant blooms on new wood, so it is best to leave the stems standing over winter to protect the crown from freezing temperatures. In early spring, cut the old stems back to about 4 inches above the ground to make room for fresh, vigorous growth. Deadheading, or cutting off faded flower spikes, encourages the plant to continue producing new blooms throughout the summer.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a light application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or a thin layer of compost in early spring as new green growth appears. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers after midsummer because this encourages soft growth that cannot harden off before winter. This tender growth is easily damaged by the first frost and can weaken the overall health of the plant.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

This saucy little hybrid Agastache is a low-maintenance clumping perennial perfect for a full sun location, in very well-drained soils. Appreciating the drying power of the morning sun to keep the scented foliage healthy and mildew-free! Deadhead to encourage rebloom and keep the plant neat and tidy. Prune back the stems in late fall, mulch the crown well, and water in well for the winter.

Thriving in drier soil once established, Hyssop can be highly drought-tolerant, but you'll get the best performance with a regular schedule of supplemental water. Although this plant does well in thin, poor soil, protect your investment and encourage healthy roots by using Nature Hills Root Booster at planting time to help your plant uptake nutrients in the soil more efficiently.
