Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Growing Zones 7-9
Gorgeous winter-blooming Kramer's Supreme Camellia (Camellia japonica 'Kramer's Supreme') is a glossy-leafed broad-leaved evergreen shrub with bright scarlet red double blooms and fragrance when you need it most!
Blooming when few other plants are in flower, Kramers Supreme pushes out its double-petalled red blooms for all to see! Gleaming in the shady garden, the red mid-winter to spring blooms just shine! Each voluptuous flower is highlighted by a bright yellow shower of stamen that act as bullseyes for bees and other curious beneficial pollinators. The Peony or Rose-like blooms are accompanied by a wonderful fragrance!
Kramer's Supreme double Camellia is heat and humidity tolerant throughout USDA growing zones 7 to 9 and can reach a lovely 6-9 foot tall size, with a nearly equal spread. You can of course train these broad-leaved evergreens into any size or shape needed, even creating a multi-trunked tree form by 'limbing up' the lower branches.
Planting and Application:
Camellias' long-lasting winter display is a breath of fresh air at a time of year when few other plants are blooming this color in mild-winter climates. For the remainder of the year, you'll enjoy the glossy evergreen foliage as a garden backdrop, screening, and privacy hedge, or as a year-round property definition!
Kramer's Supreme brightens the shaded mixed shrub border and looks incredible in groupings. Or you can create a special specimen or accent planting by situating a solitary shrub in a key location around the landscape. Try anchoring your home's foundation border, or softening a hardscape corner. Go bold and clean off the lower trunk of branching and expose the multi-trunk clump to create a stately tree-form accent!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Camellia does best in partial shade - either morning sun and afternoon shade, or all-day dappled shade. Plant in organically enriched, well-drained soil that has consistent, moderate moisture availability. Appreciating slightly acidic soil and a 3-4 inch layer of pine bark mulch over their root systems, Camellia are best pruned right after they flower. Deer tend to avoid these plants unless desperate. For best results, protect from excessively sunny or windy/exposed sites.
- Part Sun/Partial Shade
- Regular Moisture Needs & Appreciates Mulch
- Any Slightly Acidic Well-Drained Soil
- Prune Immediately After Flowering
- Seldom Bothered by Deer
