Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

There is a good chance you've never seen a Kintzley's Ghost Honeysuckle (Lonicera reticulata 'P015S') which is a hybrid between L. reticulata x L. prolifera species. We hadn't seen one until recently ... and now we can't get it out of our minds! This is unlike any Honeysuckle you've ever seen and unlike any other on the market today!
It begins its display in spring with a flush of pretty glaucous, silvery blue-green leaves. Then, in the late spring/early summer, it covers itself in button-like bunches of tiny yellow tubular honeysuckle flowers. So far, it's akin to many other Honeysuckles, right?
But, here is where things get good! Behind every flower is a perfectly circular, silvery-white, Eucalyptus-like bract that stays on the vine well into the winter, long after the flowers have faded! It looks like hundreds of full moons against the foliage!
As if that isn't enough to set it apart, in the fall, 1-3 orange-red berries appear in the center of each silvery bract, dressing the entire vine up to match the autumn season. Songbirds will flock to these berries, but unfortunately we humans cannot eat them.
This stunning and unique Vine was originally bred in 1880 by Ped Kintzley at Iowa State, but was lost to the public until 2001 when one was spotted in a side alley yard in old Ft. Collins, CO.! The owner of the house, Ped's grandson, had never really thought about the uniqueness of the vine he had. Thanks to an observant gardener, we can now offer this award-winning Honeysuckle to you!
Planting and Application:
Kintzley's Ghost® makes a spectacular centerpiece in a Moon garden, reflecting the evening light with white and silver-colored plants and flowers! Match energy by planting this unique Honeysuckle with Euphobias, Blue Fescue, Artemisia, Hostas, Lamb's Quarters, Russian Sages, Lavenders, and silvery-blue needled Conifers and Junipers!
The tiny little flower clusters are highly sought-after by beneficial insects, butterflies, and even Hummingbirds! So they're incredible nectar-filled options for the Pollinator border! The unique silvery blue-green leaves look fantastic in floral arrangements when Eucalyptus just isn't readily available, so add Kintzley's Ghost® as a backdrop to your cutting garden!
Honeysuckle creates a dramatic effect when climbing up strong supports or rambling along your porch railing. These flowers cling to a vigorously growing vine that's vibrant and dramatic as it clambers over your garden trellis and arbors. The curious foliage looks gorgeous climbing over fences and screening out unsightly views while enhancing your own.
Also, Honeysuckle Vines can be trained into a shrub, or left to trail along the ground as groundcover, garden filler, and on hard-to-mow slopes as erosion control! Beautifully spilling over retaining walls and rambling over hardscapes, throughout a Rock Garden, or just draping themselves over a garden gate or gazebo!
These flowering ornamental vines even work amazingly well in porch planters as both an upright thriller and a flowing spiller. So even if you have no yard, you can enjoy one of these easy-going ornamental Vines!
- Completely Unique Honeysuckle Vine!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
A sure conversation piece, this vine is vigorous, cold-hardy, aphid-resistant and fast-growing! Easy to grow, and hardy, Honeysuckle Vines love full sun but are also appreciative of some afternoon shade during the hottest parts of summer in warmer growing zones.
Honeysuckle are not particular about soil type, though these Vines love any well-drained soil that ranges from acidic to alkaline. Flowering best in average moisture, Honeysuckle can be very drought tolerant once established. You can apply a 3-4 inch deep layer of arborist mulch and compost around the base of your Honeysuckle to keep it happy!
Wonderfully low maintenance, these Vines won't need to be pruned often but can be trimmed back after flowering or in the late winter/early spring. Because they are fast-growing, overgrown vines can be cut back hard when dormant or renewal pruned every 3-5 years.
