Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This juniper needs full sun, meaning at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light, to maintain its vibrant gold color. In partial shade, the foliage will lose its brilliance and fade to a duller green.
  • Soil: It thrives in well drained soil and is not picky about pH levels. If you have heavy clay that holds water, mix in some coarse sand or organic matter to ensure the roots do not sit in a soggy environment.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water your juniper twice a week to help the roots settle into their new home. Once the plant is established, it is very drought tolerant and typically only needs supplemental water during long periods of extreme heat. If the soil stays too dry for too long, you might notice the golden tips looking brittle or scorched.

Pruning Tips

This shrub blooms on old wood, so the best time to prune is in early spring before the new growth begins. Instead of using shears to create a flat surface, use hand pruners to reach inside and remove entire branches at different lengths. This "haircut" maintains the natural feathery texture and allows sunlight to reach the inner branches so the center of the plant stays healthy.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer once a year in early spring to support the new growth. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers in late summer or fall because this can stimulate soft growth that will get nipped by the winter cold. A simple, general purpose shrub food is usually more than enough to keep the golden color looking its best.

A great golden Juniper that handles tough conditions and seaside gardens, the Golden Pfitzer Juniper Bush (Juniperus x pfitzeriana 'Aurea') is a fast-growing evergreen! Both Golden Pfitzer's slightly drooping branches old-growth foliage and new growth are bright gold, giving the plant its common name.

Golden Pfitzer grows to a nice 4-5 feet in height but spreads up to 6-8 feet wide! One plant will cover some serious ground as its branches from one low central point, with scaly, red-brown bark. The foliage is pungent when crushed and finely textured.

Grey berries are inconspicuous on female shrubs, less than 1/4 inch, and do not pose a litter problem but birds will seek them out for some winter nourishment. But most of these shrubs are male so there are usually no cones.

Pest and disease-free, Golden Pfitzer grows throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 9, these fast-growing golden evergreen shrubs shine throughout the entire year, staying golden green spring, summer, autumn, and winter!

Landscape Application:

This outstanding ornamental can withstand the difficult growing conditions in urban areas or at the seashore, so is one of the more widely planted Junipers in those areas! As a colorful year-round accent, hedge, or low-maintenance foundation planting, you'll gain screening and motion when you include this gilded Juniper in your landscape plan!

Great as year-round backdrops and living fences, these golden Junipers light up your landscape and provide contrast when included in a mixed shrub border!

  • Evergreen With Gold Fine-Textured Foliage
  • Fragrant Foliage When Crushed
  • Great Medium Sized Fast-Growing Shrub
  • Red, Scaly Bark & Stems
  • Bird-Friendly Bushes
  • Hedges, Screening, Foundations, Massing & Easy Year-Round Greenery

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Grows best in full sun, but will tolerate some shade. Golden Pfitzer grows best in well-drained soils, and regular water during their first year in the ground, but once established, Junipers are low-water usage plants! Thriving in some tricky sites like gravel or rocky soil, thin or poor soil locations, and tolerating coastal sites. In spring, prune back any wayward branches if needed.

  • Full Sun Shrubs
  • Must Have Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate to Low Moisture Needs
  • Prune In Spring If Needed
  • Handles Tough Sites, Shrugs Off Deer & Urban Pollution

Gold year-round greenery, the bushy fine-textured fast-growth fills your garden with bright color! Order yours now at NatureHills.com and bring this gilded beauty into your landscape plan!
