Blueberry Delight Juniper (Juniperus communis var. depressa 'AmDak') is a tough little customer with a very exciting densely spreading growth habit. This beautiful plant was a native selection found in the rugged Dakota Badlands. Plus it's an ornamental evergreen that can grow in almost any dry condition!

Juniperus communis species has one of the largest ranges of any plant and is found in every area of North America. Most of the plants are either male or female, but pollination partners for Blueberry Delight are still being developed at North Dakota State University.

The plants just glisten in bright sunlight. Each short, dark green needle is accented with a silvery-blue pinstripe. As the nights turn colder, the color deepens to a bold copper which glows in the mellow light of the setting sun.

This useful plant can really take the cold all the way down to Zone 3. It loves the hot, full sun and will thrive in just about any soil type, as long as it drains well. No need to worry about deer and rabbits, they'll tend to leave it alone. It even tolerates urban conditions and is a wonderful choice for commercial property plantings.

If there are any Common Junipers nearby, you may enjoy powdery-blue glaucous cones appearing on female plants from spring until far into winter. Birds will love this special treat!

In optimal conditions, Blueberry Delight Juniper will live up to 30 to 40 years! This carefree accent groundcover shrub is almost indestructible, once established in your native soil. Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 3-8 and can grow 8-12 inches tall but can spread 4-5 feet in width at maturity.

Landscape Application:

This shrub loves rocky, thin, poor soils. It's well adapted to growing in sandy soils and fill dirt. As long as the drainage is good, Blueberry Delight should thrive for you. Try these decorative shrubs in a mass planting on a slope or naturalized sunny area. Blueberry Delight Juniper works to fill in problem areas.

Use it along the steep sides of a rocky or eroding slope or wide open area in full sun. To create a solid mass, plant 2 feet apart on center. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next. Keep newly installed mass plantings weeded until the plants grow together and touch. Plant in Rock Gardens and Xeric sites, along your hell strip along the sidewalk, or a driveway where Juniper's salt tolerance shines.

This is a particularly useful variety in border plantings both in the home garden and commercial landscapes. For a very modern look, create geometric raised planters and fill the center with a mass planting of Blueberry Juniper. All you'll have to do is keep them clean and weeded.

Either way, you'll love the look of this attractive, hard-working multi-stemmed shrub that stays low and spreads wide. This tough, ground-hugging shrub becomes an important cover for your landscape.

Blueberry Delight Juniper looks great all day long, every day of the year. Use it to bring beauty to very dry locations in your landscape. You'll easily add color, structure, and sheltering cover for your local songbirds! Play around with texture and height, and you'll gain a wonderfully easy-care garden. Repeat the use of Blueberry Delight around your landscape for uniform visual appeal.

Why not start a Juniper collection? Use an Eastern Red Cedar tree in the back, add taller Kallay's Compact Juniper in the middle, and edge with Blueberry Delight. Don't forget to include some upright Junipers like Spartan to use as vertical accents in your planting. We even offer a spiral topiary Spartan that could become an easy focal point. Pop in a few tough prairie flowers, like Coneflower, Black-Eyed Susan, or Landscape Shrub Roses and you'll be set. Ornamental Grasses make a wonderful partner plant for Junipers, too.

Use Blueberry Delight in a long, winding row along the edge of your planting beds. Plant them on the sunny side of taller flowering shrubs or trees. You'll polish up the look with a crisp evergreen ribbon that ties everything together.

  • Native Decorative Evergreen Shrub
  • Dark Green Needles With Silvery Stripes
  • Coppery Glow In Winter
  • Blueberry-Like Cones
  • Shelter For Birds
  • Wonderfully Easy, Low-Growing Groundcover - Great for Erosion Control

#ProPlantTips for Care:

It prefers full sun but is tolerant of a few hours of shade. Blueberry Juniper laughs at strong winds, arid locations and even air pollution. All it really needs is well-drained soil. They'll adapt to acidic or alkaline soils. Give young Blueberry Delight plants a moderate amount of water on a regular basis during the first season. Poke your finger into the soil near the base of the plant. Is it moist? Skip watering that day. Is it getting dry? Provide water!

Once the plants are established in your native soil, they become very drought-tolerant. They will prefer dry conditions and can have trouble in standing water for any length of time. They show deer resistance and have no significant pest or disease issues. Lightly tip prune them every year or so to keep the center dense, then allow it to fill in.

  • Full Sun Evergreens
  • Almost Any Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate to Low Moisture Needs - Drought Tolerant
  • Hardy & Tolerant Of A Wide Range Of Conditions
  • Deer & Rabbits Tend to Leave it Alone
  • Low Maintenance - Really Hardy Even in Extreme Cold
