Professional garden designers look for hard-working shrubs to create a well-appointed landscape. They use these landscape workhorses to define their garden plan and add interest all year long. One of the best landscaping shrubs available on the market is the deliciously fragrant Judd Viburnum (Viburnum x 'Juddii'). Introduced in 1920, this classic garden shrub has stood the test of time!
Just as the brand new leaves emerge, start looking for clusters of waxy, pink buds of the springtime flowers. Ornamental buds open into showy white loosely snowball-shaped blooms. Enjoy their heavenly spicy scent throughout your yard, but especially in high-profile areas. You won't be the only one who loves these flowers! Watch for all the types of butterflies that appreciate their nectar-rich charms!
Trust us, you'll be very excited to see them after a long winter. It will certainly be a standout in your own garden! Make the most of your garden with Judd's wonderfully formal-looking rounded form. You won't have to worry about disease or insect issues. Feel good about providing food and cover for wildlife, but deer tend to pass it by. It adapts well to a wide variety of environmental climates throughout USDA hardiness zones 4 - 8!
As autumn comes on, the foliage assumes a beautiful burnished purple-red. Allow the handsome fall color to easily accent your end-of-season entertaining for weeks on end. Over the season, the flowers morph into clustered fruit that ripens from red to black. They'll persist until your local songbirds take them for a nutritious meal. Get the best of all worlds, from sturdy form to savory blooms; to fall color and fruit for the birds.
Planting and Application:
Snip a few of the blooms to place in bud vases indoors. You'll only need to cut a few to perfume your entire space. Place one on a bedside table to sponsor a night of lavish dreams. Fit these compact, rounded Viburnums in many sunny places in your landscape! You'll love the intoxicating fragrance of the gorgeous blooms. Plant them where you'll be able to savor their scent throughout your day. They make spectacular shrubs to anchor your foundation and patio plantings.
Whether you need to decorate a commercial or residential property, you'll appreciate the way these deciduous shrubs remain lush all the way to the ground. Use a pair on either side of a garden path. Or, add one to the corner of your garage. A dense covering of attractive, leathery leaves brings a welcome sense of privacy and definition.
Weave them into existing plantings and windbreaks to amplify their visual effect. Replace faded, lackluster options with these brilliant shrubs. Gift yourself the sight and scent of Judd Viburnum. #ProPlantTips for Care:
Judd Viburnum tolerates just about any well-drained soil type. Elevate your planting to improve drainage, as needed. Bring in additional soil and mound it up to 18 inches as a raised planting site. Apply a moderate amount of moisture on a regular basis. Consistent moisture will keep the plants stress-free to promote healthy growth. Be sure to add a three-inch layer of mulch to keep the root system cool and moist. Pull it back away from the stems and reapply periodically.
Prune lightly only to shape right after flowering is finished. This shrub blooms on last year's wood, so don't delay. Waiting too long will cut off the buds of next year's blooms. Renewal prune when dormant by removing the oldest fattest branches to the ground.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Judd Viburnum Bushes Fragrant?
The flowers on the Judd Viburnum have a wonderfully strong, sweet fragrance.
When Do You Prune Flowering Viburnum Shrubs?
Viburnum shrubs bloom on old wood, so it is very important to only prune them immediately after the flowers fade. Should you wish to enjoy the fruit that forms after the flowers fade, then do not prune, instead remove one-third of the oldest, fattest stems that are no longer as vigorous. Pruning them out at the ground level. This leaves fruit for birds and winter interest and increases overall plant vigor while reducing the size of your shrub.
Do Viburnums Like Full Sun or Shade? What is the Best Location for Viburnum?
Viburnums in general need full sun for the most fruit and flowers, but also do well in partial shade and afternoon shade. Highly adaptable, they enjoy mulched, enriched soil that is slightly acidic. They need regular moisture while young, but once established will only need supplemental moisture during extreme heat and drought.
Does Judd Viburnum Produce Fruit?
The Judd Viburnum will produce black fruit but they need another Viburnum to cross-pollinate.
Does Viburnum Spread?
Judd Viburnum will stool out as the plant ages. Renewal pruning encourages new shoots to develop from the roots which is good but you can limit the width of the plant if so desired. It is not considered invasive.
Do Viburnum Shrubs Lose Their Leaves in Winter?
Judd Viburnum is a deciduous Viburnum and will drop its leaves in the fall.
