Japanese Snowball Viburnum (Viburnum plicatum var. plicatum) The blooms appear in masses in May or June, depending upon where it is grown. An incredible flower display of huge, rounded flower clusters are produced at the end of each branch in late spring. Often sterile, these shrubs put on quite the show all spring to rival the mophead Hydrangea bush!

Many Snowball Viburnum owners love snipping a few of the flouncy pompoms and bringing them inside as decorations. They are also lovely when dried for botanical décor and craft projects. Songbirds will find ample shelter and nesting sites within the large arms of this ornamental shrub. But unlike other Viburnum varieties, this sterile form won’t produce messy seeds, so be sure to get your feathered friends a bird feeder.

Filling out with toothy, textured vivid green leaves, the Japanese Snowball Viburnum is similar to its cousins the Common Snowball and the Chinese Snowball Viburnum but the Japanese Snowball has a trick up its sleeve! These magnificent shrubs bloom on both new and old wood! Extremely hardy variety, this low-maintenance shrub is resistant to leaf spots and powdery mildew too!

Planting and Application:

This Snowball is covered in big round blooms in glistening white! For both front and backyard locations, any sunny site becomes an enchanted garden when these big, flouncy pillows of delight are in bloom! Mystify a Children's Garden, elevate a Cottage border in more ways than one, and anchor a Pollinator garden to feed all the butterflies!

These big, showy shrubs are easy to grow and put on quite a show! Japanese Snowball Viburnums are also impressive screening plants! Adaptable to moist to occasionally wet soil, water features and Rain Gardens become secret gardens! Reflect one of these shrubs against a water feature in your Moon Gardens or Zen garden for peace and serenity amidst a hectic world!

For a natural-looking hedge along a fence or hide an eyesore, leave them un-pruned in their natural form or shear your shrub after flowers fade to tidy them up. Plant your shrubs X feet apart on center for a fluffy, continuous screen. Try several of them along your patio for an easy-breezy privacy border or backdrop. It's very hardy, and once established, will thrive with minimal care.

  • Massive Spring Flower Display of Compact Blossoms
  • Large Mopheads For Cut Flowers & Pollinators
  • Lush Toothy & Textured Vivid Green Leaves
  • Adaptable, Resistant & Hardy Ornamental Flowering Deciduous Shrub
  • Backdrops, Hedges, Outdoor Rooms & Screening, Wildlife & Privacy Specimens

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Taking care of a Japanese Snowball Viburnum is super easy! They appreciate being planted somewhere they can be in full sun but they'll also do well with some partial shade - especially afternoon shade relief in the hotter of its favored USDA growing zones X. Unlike many flowers and plants, this deciduous shrub is tolerant of wet soils. Plant in enriched, highly organic, well-draining soil for best results.

Mulch the root system well with 3-4 inches of arborist bark chips, but be mindful not to allow them to pile up against the trunk. Prune only after flowering to clean up the plant and deadhead, and in late winter or early spring you can prune the oldest stems out entirely when necessary to rejuvenate growth.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Rich Organic Well-Drained Soils & Mulch
  • Tolerant of Average to Wet Sites
  • Prune After Flowering
  • Seldom Damaged by Deer & Juglone Resistant
  • Easy-Care & Low Maintenance
