Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 6-9
Bullet-proof groundcover! Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, has given us coffee milk, grinders, and quahogs! While you may not be familiar with these things, you will be glad we introduced you to the wonderful Hoogendorn Japanese Holly (Ilex crenata 'Hoogendorn')! This is a male Holly species, and while there are small white flowers in the spring that the bees adore, they are small and not showy, but won't create any seeds or fruit!
A superior dwarf, Hoogendorn Japanese Holly shrub, it's an amazingly compact broadleaf evergreen groundcover and a wonderfully space-saving option. A thickly branched, mounding, wide-spreading shrub, they choke out weeds for year-round carpets of green! Plant among female Ilex crenata selections to pollinate them.
Discovered at Hoogendorn Nursery in Middletown, it's cold-tolerant and water-wise! Growing low and tidy, these maintain a densely branched, compactly mounded shape without pruning. Small, finely textured, dark-green foliage is a perfect Boxwood alternative! Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 6 to 9, Hoogendorn spreads 2-3 feet wide at maturity and only 18-24 inches tall.
Planting and Application:
Hoogendorn makes a wonderful short border shrub around larger beds, or along walkways for definition. Growing thick enough to be weed-block under trees and large open areas, and for hassle-free mass plantings for a beautiful, year-round carpet. Plant en masse as a low-maintenance, weed-blocking living mulch or groundcover that fills in for carpets of garden greenery between large and small shrubs and trees.
Great spillers over the edges of planters, rambling along the sides of paths, and Hoogendorn at the edges of garden beds that transition into lawns instantly appear neater. Plus Hoogendorn is one of the best foundation plants and container evergreens around!
If you have rocky ground, this Holly happily carpets the spaces between! Hoogendorn rambles over hardscapes and softens retaining wall edges. These are excellent choices for Rock Gardens, or xeriscaping! Add finishing touches to Asian and Zen-inspired gardens, letting spill and fill around the water's edges! Fitting right into modern and informal gardens, or country cottage gardens and urban courtyards alike.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Discovered thriving in the far north-eastern US, there's no need to worry about harsh winters because Hoogendorn will stay evergreen. Doing best in full sun and part shade, Japanese Holly just needs well-drained soil and is not particular about the type. Be sure to water well to establish young plants during their first year. An easy-to-grow, Boxwood-like Holly that is very adaptable - but will grow best in slightly acidic soils that are not allowed to dry out too much. Mulch is very beneficial for this plant. Verticillium wilt-resistant plants!
- Full Sun & Partial Shade Tolerant
- Any Well-Drained Soil Type
- Low Moisture Needs Once Established
- Verticillium Wilt, Disease & Deer Resistant
- Easy-Care & Cold Hardy
The Hoogendorn Japanese Holly is a "bulletproof" groundcover, and you'll be glad you ordered yours from Nature Hills Nursery today! See for yourself what a tough, low-maintenance living weed blocker this amazing plant is!
