Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 3-8
Bright red James Kelway Painted Daisy (Tanacetum coccineum 'James Kelway') makes a vivid splash of color in your garden. People love the pure red petals and bold golden-yellow button centers...contending there is no other perennial quite so showy!
The spectacular flowers are held up high on strong, sturdy stems above mounds of finely-cut green foliage. Even out of bloom, James Kelway looks trim and tidy!
Planting and Application:
Grow several of them to enjoy the high-contrast blooms in cut flower bouquets indoors. You'll want to leave some for the butterflies, too...they make such a pretty picture atop the flat surface of the three-inch wide flowers.
- The botanical name of these beautiful "Thrillers" has changed...first from Chrysanthemum to Pyrethrum and recently to Tanacetum coccineum. Don't worry, they'll still steal the show in your patio pots and container gardens!
- Repeat them along your borders for their designer style. Jeames Kelway easily freshens up bland, boring mature plantings into a dazzling showpiece.
- They would suit Japanese style gardens just as well as an English Cottage garden. And no Butterfly Garden should be without their long-lasting blooms!
- Snip back the first flowering flush of spring blooms, and you'll be rewarded with additional flowers through the season.
- Plant them with other Daisy types, including: Ox Eye, Shasta, Helenium and Aster. Please...let your creativity soar when using these dynamic red flowers.
#ProPlantTips for Care:
They will flower in well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. They do require at least four hours of sunlight a day; the more sun, the better!
- Provide life-long support with symbiotic Nature Hills Root Booster used in the planting hole. .
- Keep your Tanacetum coccineum 'James Kelway' happy and stress-free with supplemental water on a regular basis during the first year and in times of drought. Mulch around the plants, but never let wood mulch rest directly against the stems.
