  • Sunlight: This tree craves full sun, meaning at least 6 hours of direct daylight. While it can tolerate partial shade, you’ll trade off the vibrancy of its trademark golden fall color; shade-grown ginkgos often have a more muted yellow autumn display and sparser leaves.
  • Soil: Ideally, this tree wants well-drained, sandy or loamy soil. However, it is incredibly tough and adapts well to clay or compacted urban soils once settled. If you have heavy clay, amend the soil with organic matter like compost to improve drainage, as "wet feet" (waterlogged roots) is one of the few things that can kill it.

Watering Requirements

During the first two years, think of your tree as a baby that needs constant attention; water it deeply 1-2 times per week to help the deep taproot establish.
