Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Growing Zones 3-7
The Iroquois Beauty™ Black Chokeberry Bush (Aronia melanocarpa 'Morton') is selected for its compact habit and three-season interest. Clusters of pretty white flowers in spring, abundant black berries in summer, and gorgeous wine-red fall color. It will slowly spread, and is great for massing, rows, hedges and groupings!
Highly beneficial for pollinators, the white blossoms in spring quickly transform into delightful fruit. Among the toothy, glossy green leaves the berries turn from green to red then to purple and finally a glossy black before the foliage transforms into an incredible color displaying every autumn hue you can imagine!
The incredible health benefits of Aronia have been studied extensively in Eastern Europe for many years. The fruit is a powerful antioxidant over 400% higher than Blueberries! Turns out, Aronia berries are a potent medicinal fruit that can slow the growth of cancer and age-related learning and memory issues.
Planting and Application:
These are a boon to birds, not just for the shelter they provide, but also food when other resources are scarce! And people can eat them too - make sauces, jams, baked goods, fresh or dried! Freeze for year-round use, juicing and smoothies. Just don't skimp on the sweetener - they're called Chokeberries for good reason!
This compact native shrub cultivar typically grows to 2-3 feet tall and to 4-5 feet wide and can be grouped or massed in shrub borders, small gardens or open woodland areas. Since it has the ability to withstand wet conditions, it is suitable for growing on the margins of ponds or streams. Iroquois Beauty™ is an excellent addition to naturalized areas where its suckering, colonial growth habit does not need to be restrained.
