The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Rich deep-red blooms of the reblooming War Chief Bearded Iris (Iris germanica 'War Chief') are top to bottom a dark, brick scarlet-red to smokey ruby red hue! Top to bottom, the flags and falls of this selection are through and through saturated color! The petals are wavy and curvy and have an illustrious sheen and fragrance too!
Pollinators and a few curious Hummingbirds will stop by for the nectar and you will love watching bumblebees dance in the fuzzy matching burgundy beards of each petal. You will frequently stop by for a whiff of the sweet Iris fragrance too!
The tall dark-green vertical spears rise up architecturally and become fantastic backdrops for the late summer bloom of these vigorous growers, long after the flowers fade. Cold and heat-hardy throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 9, these Bearded Iris grow up to 3 feet in height when in bloom but the clumps of rhizomes spread just 1-2 feet at maturity.
Planting and Application:
War Chief is perfect for perennial and Cottage beds, pollinator gardens, and mixed perennial borders in the sun or part shade! Enhance your home's foundation with these upright low-maintenance perennials. Add rows to the back of garden borders to highlight all other plants delightfully all growing season! Groupings also maximize this incredible hue!
Add some intriguing color to a cutting garden for elegant bouquet blooms! The brick-red color mixed beautifully in the vase with smokey pinks, other brooding reds, bruised plums, and purples, muted yellow and orange, and hazy blues. Keep the theme going by mixing War Chief with Cinco de Mayo™ Rose, Twilite Prairieblues™ False Indigo, Rainbow Rhythm® Ruby Spider Daylily, and Artisan™ Red Ombre Coneflowers.
Small space garden plots and containers gain height and color with these small-footprint plants. Don't worry about over-crowding, because Iris rhizomes won't mind sharing, just be sure not to let them be the ones getting smothered! Bearded Iris can tolerate a bit of higher moisture as well as handle drought, so plant them around a Rain Garden or water feature or in the Rock Garden. Iris even works beautifully as a vertical element and spring thriller in container garden combinations

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Incredibly easy to grow and tolerant of a wide range of growing zones, soil types, and moisture availability, Iris are perfect for novice and experienced gardeners alike! German Iris loves full sun and in hotter climates appreciates some part shade in the afternoon. Iris are highly adaptable to soil and water, just be sure to water well to get established. They also appreciate a protective layer of mulch as their rhizomes prefer to be partly out of the soil when planted.
Information About Bare Root Iris
Plant Iris about 15-18 inches apart. Bare root Iris are shipped as nice fresh-cut divisions with two to three fans of green tops. Keep in mind each Iris variety can have slightly different-sized roots.
When planting, ensure 1/3rd of the rhizome is exposed to sunlight with the roots buried underneath. Note, that it's best to cover the rhizome with a thin layer of mulch or leaves to protect it during the coldest months but make sure to uncover them in the spring.
