Beverly Sills Tall Bearded Iris (Iris germanica 'Beverly Sills') features a uniform, heavily ruffled, soft and dreamy, shell pink bloom with lacy edges and impeccable form! An extremely fast grower and very heavy bloomer, Beverly Sills blooms early to mid-season in extravagant fashion! With hints of coral, salmon, orange beards, and flamingo pink, the colors can vary as the flowers open and mature.
Gather the large blooms for an extraordinary indoor arrangement and enjoy the sweet fragrance! The show continues as the flowers can rebloom later in the season! Giving you, and your Bees and butterflies an encore of dramatically ruffled edges of both the falls and flags. Backed by a flush of vertical, sword-like foliage, Bearded Iris can form groupings up to 2 feet wide, but when in flower will soar up to 3 feet on strong, waving wand-like stems.
Still one of the most sought-after Irises today, Beverly Sills is the winner of numerous awards including an Honorable Mention Award in 1981, Award of Merit in 1983, and Dykes Medal in 1985! Also known as German Iris, these are hardy throughout an impressively wide range of USDA growing zones from 3 to 10, easy-to-grow Beverly Sill's will attract pollinators and hummingbirds but is very rabbit, squirrel, and deer-resistant.
Planting and Application:
Beverly Sills was an opera diva and called "America's Queen of the Opera", and this lovely flower embodies the beauty of the famous soprano! The soft color and form of this Iris are useful in many ways throughout the sunny landscape! The romantic soft beauty is ideal for flouncy Cottage gardens, adds lacy fringe to mixed Perennial borders, and is a must-have for the cut flower garden!
Their tolerance for higher moisture means Bearded Iris can be used around pools, ponds, and the edges of water gardens, and naturalize wonderfully for use in mass plantings. It can also be used in difficult banks to prevent erosion.
However, once established, Tall Bearded Iris can be drought tolerant, so plant these gorgeous rhizomes in your Rock Garden, or less-than-ideal garden settings without worry. Even container gardens and smaller courtyards can enjoy these fragrant spring blooms that exude romance and opulence!
- Cool & Creamy Shell-Pink Bearded & Ruffled Blooms
- Upright Clumps of Sword-Like Green Foliage
- Romantic Cut Flowers & Pollinator Friendly
- Great in Containers, Groupings & Rows
- Soft Hue For Cottage & Perennial Gardens & Mixed Plantings
#ProPlantTips for Care:
German Iris rhizomes prefer moist, well-drained soil in full sun, but will tolerate some afternoon shade. This Iris needs plenty of water throughout the season to continue to look its best. Bearded Iris are easy to grow and become drought tolerant and self-sufficient once established. All plants appreciate a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch over their roots, especially Iris rhizomes prefer only to be partially covered.
Information About Bare Root Iris
Bare root Iris are shipped as nice fresh-cut divisions with two to three fans of green tops. Keep in mind each Iris variety can have slightly different-sized roots.
When planting, ensure 1/3rd of the rhizome is exposed to sunlight with the roots buried underneath. Note, that it's best to cover the rhizome with a thin layer of mulch or leaves to protect them during the coldest months but make sure to uncover in the spring.
