Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Plant this hydrangea where it will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day to ensure the stems grow strong enough to support the large blooms. While it can handle some partial shade, too much shade often leads to floppy stems and reduced flower production.
  • Soil: Ensure the soil is rich in organic matter and drains well, as soggy roots can lead to rot. If you have heavy clay soil, mix in compost or peat moss at planting time to improve drainage and aeration.

Watering Requirements

Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the first year while the root system is establishing itself. Once established, Smooth Hydrangeas like Invincibelle Garnetta® are not drought-tolerant and will wilt quickly if the soil dries out completely. A 3-inch layer of mulch is highly recommended to help retain moisture and keep the roots cool during the heat of summer.

Pruning Tips

Because this variety blooms on new wood, you should prune it in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Cut the stems down by about one-third of their total height to encourage vigorous new growth and sturdy stems for the season's flowers. Avoid pruning later in the season, or you risk cutting off the flower buds that are forming for summer.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a granular, slow-release fertilizer formulated for flowering shrubs in early spring as new green leaves start to emerge. Avoid fertilizing after late July, as this can push soft, tender growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost.

#ProPlantTips For Care

Garnetta Hydrangea is best in full sun in the cooler growing zones of 3 up to zone 8. However, it does better with some afternoon shade during the worst of summer. Equally thriving in part sun to dappled shade as well.

Keep your garden gems healthy in organically rich, humus soil that is well-drained. Also able to tolerate saline conditions and less than optimal soil, Hydrangea are very resilient.

Water consistently and do not let dry out between waterings to establish, afterwards, Hydrangea enjoy average moisture. They greatly appreciate extra watering during the heat of summer.

Very cold resistant, Hydrangeas do benefit from a generous layer of mulch to better retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill.

Pruning is only necessary to remove winter dieback on this compact plant but if desired you can and should only prune in late winter or early spring before you see new growth. Blooming on new wood, this way you will not remove any of these amazing flowers!

Invincibelle® Garnetta Hydrangea will be just the ornament your garden needs! Sparkling lush pink gems like these hardy native plants add glitz to your outdoor spaces. Order your own from the Hydrangea experts at Nature Hills today!
