Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Provide at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight every day. Full sun is essential for the plant to produce the essential oils that give the foliage and flowers their intense fragrance.
  • Soil: Use lean, gritty soil that drains very quickly. If you have heavy clay, plant in a raised bed or a mound of soil mixed with small gravel to ensure the roots never sit in stagnant water.

Watering Requirements

Water your new lavender once or twice a week until the root system is established. Mature plants are very drought tolerant and usually only need extra water during long periods of extreme heat. Overwatering is the most common mistake, as "wet feet" will quickly lead to root rot and plant death.

Pruning Tips

This variety blooms on new wood, so you should prune it in early spring as soon as you see new growth emerging. Shear the stems back by about one third to keep the plant from getting leggy and to encourage a dense, mounded shape. Do not cut back into the old, leafless wood because those stems cannot easily sprout new leaves.

Fertilizer Needs

Lavender thrives in poor soil, so a single application of a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring is all it needs. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers, especially late in the growing season. Too much nitrogen causes the plant to produce soft, weak growth that is easily damaged by winter frost.
