Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Growing Zones 4-7
Don't miss this unique specimen! It's like nothing you have seen before (and we guarantee the neighbors haven't either!) Introducing the collector-worthy Ice Breaker™ Korean Fir (Abies koreana 'Kohout's Icebreaker')! Naturally frosted and flocked, this is a small, rounded evergreen that looks perpetually snow-covered! Each of the inward-curving needles are silvery blue-green with white frosted undersides, creating a two-tone and clustered effect!
Also called Kohout's Icebreaker, this truly unique Korean Fir is a very special dwarf coniferous evergreen! Growing into a mounded dome-shape only 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide in about 10 years. The dense branches curve inwards, and so do the short needles, so that it is the silvery backs that we see. This gives the plant an incredibly intense frosted silver effect!
This Korean Fir is a new, dwarf selection! Like its parent plant ('Horstmann's Silberlocke'), it has curiously twisted strongly-curled silvery needles, showing the undersides that make the species distinctive! The short branches develop symmetrically and form a nice globe when young! Mature plants develop a central leader, eventually becoming a short, squat tree! Slow growing adding only 1 to 3 inches of new growth each year means years of enjoyment without any work or maintenance from you!
Planting and Application:
Ice Breaker™ begs to be used as a cool and collected specimen plant! Mixed and massed accent plants, use groupings or rows as focal points in high-profile locations where they can shine in the sun! These garden curiosities add dramatic flair without sacrificing precious garden space! Brilliant and sparkling, Ice Breaker™ is set off by darker groundcovers, dark mulch, or against dark stone pavers!
Grow it as a standout focal point in a small bed, or among other dwarf evergreens. Grow it along a walkway, patio or terrace to add light and lively year-round interest! Small enough to use in protected outdoor urns, large planters, and a thriller, or plant in pots and window boxes for year-round décor. Over time, Ice Breaker™ will become a remarkable specimen plant and a real conversation starter!

#ProPlantTips For Care
Like most of its cousins, Ice Breaker™ Firs need a sunny location and they do demand well-drained soils with consistent moisture access until established. Older trees only need supplemental moisture during dry winters and hot summer months. Mulch their root systems with 3-4 inches of arborist bark chips to keep them moist throughout the summer and insulated all winter. Always maintain the lowest branches and never plant too deep. Pruning is typically not ever needed
- Full Sun
- Moderate Consistent Moisture
- Adaptable to Any Well-Drained Soil
- Rarely Needs Pruning
- Very Low Maintenance
A rare beauty with great color and unique form, the Ice Breaker™ Korean Fir tree will delight you for years to come and make your neighbors green with envy that you got yours first! Hurry and order this brand-new selection today from the experts at NatureHills.com!
