An impressive Grandiflora the PeeGee Panicle Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata 'Grandiflora'), is a fantastic American garden tradition. Sent to America from Japan in 1861, this continues to be one of the best-loved varieties.

Grown either as a large shrub or small tree, providing high impact on any landscape style!

Valued for its vigor and bloom dependability, PeeGee has gorgeous flowers that appear in mid-summer and remain until the first hard frost. Completely covering the plant in snowy-white blooms, which are comprised of lovely clusters of smaller flowers.

The large conical white flower heads turn a blushed, light pink as they age. Beginning as a brilliantly white flower, the blooms age to pink, and finally a rusty brown in autumn.

With lovely gray-hued, dark green leaves, that are deeply veined and pointed, each carries delicate saw-toothed edges. The PeeGee Hydrangea's form is naturally rounded and tidy, providing an impressive presence in any landscape.

Imagine the stems on this upright plant, so heavy in bloom they cause the stems to gracefully arch downwards under the burden of lovely florets. Don't worry though, these sturdy stems won't go flat!

Autumn brings yellow and tan fall colors and winter shows off the stout stem with reddish-brown bark streaked with gray.

The cone-shaped flower clusters can easily be used in fresh bouquets or for drying at any stage of the bloom for amazing home decor.

How to Use PeeGee Hydrangea In The Landscape

The hefty presence that this large shrub brings to the landscape, gives you so many options for its use! Easy-care and versatile, you are only held back by your imagination!

You can use PeeGee Hydrangea as a tall hedge, or informal border to highlight other shrubs with an impressive backdrop of green! These lovelies block unsightly views and enclose your yard with a splendid presence.

Cut flower beds and pollinator gardens are lovely places to highlight this Panicle Hydrangea as a specimen plant, especially when pruned as a small tree. The tree form of the PeeGee is a high-style accent!

Compact growth makes PeeGee an excellent plant to use for stately privacy and screening. The branching is dense enough and their height makes PeeGee the perfect ornamental shelterbelts and windbreak, especially with the added backdrop!

Butterflies, bees and even hummingbirds will enjoy your PeeGee Panicle Hydrangea too! With sterile flowers, there are no messy seeds to clean up.

#ProPlantTips For Care

Unlike other Hydrangea, Panicle Hydrangea varieties may be grown in full sun if they receive adequate moisture. And PeeGee Hydrangea loves the full sun! They can also do well in partial shade, especially in warmer summer growing zones.

Hardy growing zones 3 through 8, PeeGee appreciate some shade in the hot afternoon sun in the summer heat and will need adequate moisture availability.

Panicle Hydrangea love moisture too, so warmer growing zones should provide these plants with lots of water through the summers, especially to support the formation of those large, flouncy blooms!

Soil type for this Hydrangea is any type, from clay to sand to loam, just as long as the soil is well-drained. Though they will do their very best in organically rich soil.

Preferring acidic soil, you won't need to worry about your PeeGee Panicle Hydrangeas blooms changing color with the pH level of the soil. PeeGee is salt tolerant making them lovely street trees and tough shrubs for urban conditions.

Mulch benefits these plants regardless of growing conditions. A generous layer of mulch in cold zones insulates the roots from the winter's chill while keeping the roots cool in the heat. The mulch also prevents moisture loss and a top dressing of mulch makes everything look so much cleaner!

Relatively pest and disease-free. A vigorous grower, reaching 10-18 feet tall, can be pruned smaller as needed. The PeeGee can be pruned at any time except when they begin to form bloom heads in the summer. You wouldn't want to miss out on the floral display!

Bought here before. I love the Pee Gees because of the fall blooms. I bought 3 this summer. They arrived well packed but a bit wilted. I watered them, hoping they would survive the stress from traveling in the summer heat. Two months later & they're blooming!

Fall blooms

PeeGee hydrangeas became my favorite because of the large fall blooms it produces. Last year we had a late frost so my enjoyment of the blooms lasted a long time.

Dear Acey,

It’s wonderful that last year’s late frost extended your enjoyment—the unique climate conditions can certainly add a special touch to your garden’s story.

If you’re looking to keep those blooms vibrant year-round, consider occasional pruning right after flowering to encourage healthy growth, and making sure your hydrangea stays hydrated, especially during dry spells. Adding a layer of mulch can help protect roots when frost threatens again.
