Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

*If you have found your zone already, it will be highlighted in the table below.

The Hybrid Chestnut Tree (Castanea dentata x mollissima) is a modern Chestnut with great disease resistance and beautiful shade! Unique flowers and a high yield of tasty nuts, these trees are majestic specimens!

Once a popular street tree, every boulevard once had rows of these arching over them until a blight killed a significant population of these trees. Now new blight-resistant varieties like the Hybrid Chestnut are back to once again grace our landscapes!

This hybrid has lush green compound leaves, that feature scalloped edges and pleated venation. They sprout dainty yellow flowers during late spring that turn into spikey green fruit in fall. The green spiked balls are filled with a treasure of sweet, easy-to-peel, glossy dark brown nuts! Also known as conkers, there are countless ways to enjoy these nuts, by roasting, boiling or candy them!

Planting and Application:

Plant as a specimen tree in your landscape as a focal point. However, in order to get the most out of this tree, you'll definitely want to plant it in groups to maximize pollination, and thus, chestnut production!

Try planting a small grove near the back of your landscape or start your own nut orchard. It will create a stunning backdrop for the rest of the garden and a lovely border for the yard. Not to mention the lush shade all growing season!

  • Fantastic shade and specimen trees
  • Lush foliage, yellow flowers, fall color and edible nuts
  • Great hardwood tree that’s rot-resistant
  • Great for hunters - attract deer and turkey
  • Mulch and moderate fertility

#ProPlantTips for Care:

This tree is a sun lover and would appreciate nothing more than to be planted in a nice sunny spot. Provide new trees with ample water

It should thrive in well-drained soil, with moderate moisture access. One thing Chestnuts dislike is wet, soggy soil. Mulch your tree very well with 3-4 inches of mulch over the roots to reduce watering frequency and insulate the roots from heat and cold.

  • Very easy tree to care for
  • First harvest as early as 2-3 years old
  • Important wildlife trees
  • Disease resistant

For an impressive and majestic tree, help the mighty Chestnut make a comeback by planting the new and improved Hybrid Chestnut Tree for your landscape today at NatureHills.com!
