Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

Who wants Hummingbirds? Of course, we all do! Hummingbirds adore the fruity-scented, fuchsia flowers produced by this hardy native Hummingbird Sage (Salvia spathacea)! If you are committed to protecting these amazing little creatives, and encouraging them into your garden, then this native perennial is a must-have to provide a critical nectar source!

One of Hummingbird Salvia's best features is the extremely unique spires of vertical blooms produced in profusion from winter to summer throughout warm, frost-free climates of USDA planting zones 7 to 10! The plum two-foot tall stems with plum-purple sepals lining the dark stems create intricate tall spires, held aloft over the furry, sweetly fragrant mounds of leaves!

These sepals become festooned in brilliant magenta-pink tubular flowers, perfect for the proboscis of bees and butterflies, Hummingbird Moths, and the beaks of Hummingbirds! They are gorgeous and will draw in your beneficial insects with a sweet, fruit scent that will permeate your entire landscape. What a nice way to welcome spring every year! Don't forget to bring a few of these scented blooms indoors for your bouquets!

Planting and Application:

Hummingbird Meadow Sage is an herbaceous perennial that can be massed or grouped in dry, xeric stretches and hell strips throughout your landscape! Mass on a hard-to-mow sunny hillside or eroding slope, along the fronts of garden beds as edging, or in winding ribbons of color along sun-drenched pathways, sidewalks, or the roadside strip. A member of the Mint family, this place will happily grow to cover ground for you with its gradual creeping and colonizing nature!

The ideal low-growing specimen for use in mixed perennial and mixed shrub borders, Cottage and Rock Gardens, and of course any pollinator and Hummingbird-attracting setting! Wildflower and Prairie gardens, even Cut Flower gardens bring in your flying friends! Set up a hummingbird feeder and plenty of safe watering stations for your many visitors so they feel right at home.

Growing just 18 inches wide at maturity, the leafy clumps and their tall blooms look great in large planters and porch containers on your sun-drenched patios, seating areas, and even balconies! Spectacular as a space-saving specimen, any full sun location will suit these hot-climate sun-loving perennials beautifully!

  • Dark Blue/Purple Florets On Dark-Stemmed Spires
  • Dark Green Clumps of Aromatic Greenery
  • True Dwarf Compact Mounds
  • Pollinator, Bee, Butterfly & Hummingbird-Friendly
  • Gorgeous Container Specimens, Borders & Edging & Space-Saving Accents

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Salvia and Perennial Sages are wonderful perennials for attracting wildlife, and easy enough to grow for the inexperienced or busy gardener! Grow these heat-loving plants in full sun for the most blooms and the strongest growth. Salvia needs very well-drained soil and moderate moisture, becoming xeric once established, requiring only supplemental moisture during extended heat and drought to not miss a moment of those richly-colored flowers. Plant with Nature Hills Root Booster and top-dress the area with 3-4 inches of arborist mulch for insulation, moisture retention, and to block weeds.

Deadhead Salvia for frequent rebloom until frost. If your plant becomes leggy, pinch back in spring or cut back plants by half after the first flush of flowers. Prune back in the late fall for a clean, even flush of growth. These perennials appreciate being divided every 3-5 years to maintain their growing vigor.

  • Humidity & Heat Tolerant - Full Sun Perennials
  • Needs Well-Drained Soils
  • Drought Resistant Once Established
  • Deadhead For Return Blooms & Prune Early Spring
  • Incredibly Hardy, Rabbit & Deer Resistant
