Gardeners are always looking for two things: 1. shade plants and 2. blue plants! Also known as Funkia or Plantain Lily, the Hosta Halcyon (Hosta 'Halcyon') is a reliable winner that requires little attention! The Halcyon Hosta is made for the shade and is the most interesting frosty ocean-blue color, earning it the 1997 Award of Merit (AGM)!

It's a vigorous (but slower) grower with ribbed, spear-shaped foliage that sits underneath white-to-lavender bell-shaped flowers from July to August. Slug-resistant Halcyon attracts Hummingbirds during blooming, plus the usual pollinators! Steal a few for your bouquets indoors as well! Despite these lovely trumpet-shaped blooms, the real show is the foliage itself.

A fan-favorite, Halycon Hosta grows in the familiar fountain-like mounded form to about 1-2 feet tall and up to 3 feet wide! Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 8, these are wonderful perennials for even the most novice gardeners! It will be easy for you to get hooked on Hostas! Start your own collection and create a specimen planting with these fantastic plants! gardener!

Planting and Application:

Like all Hosta, Halcyon is most at home in shady, woodland settings and works well as an accent or edging plant, or groundcover! Spectacular when planted in shade borders, around large shade trees and even in large containers! Borders look divine with long rows of Hosta skirting and tidying up their edges. So will your driveway and walkways, and shady paths.

Perfect for shady Asian and Zen-inspired gardens, blue-leaved Hostas lend a cool and calming presence to areas for meditation and relaxation. In fact, nearly any garden design looks more peaceful with a few Hosta! Contemporary plantings and informal cottage gardens alike benefit from these large perennials and other shade-loving plants. Pollinator gardens and your Cottage gardens will get a traditional look with the addition of a few of these curious perennials!

Skirting trees with these lovely perennials will equally benefit from the generous shade the trees provide. Large shrubs too will look immensely better having their bare stems hidden from view without the worry about roots interfering with each other!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Halcyon needs full shade in all growing zones, but in the coolest climates, it can tolerate morning sun. Highly resistant to heat and humidity long as they're given adequate shade and moisture, especially throughout the hottest part of the growing season. Tolerant of dry shade once established, these become incredibly resilient perennials! Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained soils that are highly organic. Preferring a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. A generous 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch chips helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill. Low maintenance and easy care, there's not much work for you! Once frosts arrive, Hosta is an herbaceous perennial that dies back to the ground and should be cleaned in the fall so there is no remaining debris for when it emerges again in early spring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Hostas need full sun or shade?

Hosta does best in full sun in cooler climates but does appreciate afternoon protection from the worst of the summer sun, especially in the hottest of their growing zone range. In the hottest climates, Hosta like partial shade or dappled shade, and some varieties will do great in full shade.

Where do Hostas grow best?

Hosta plants love enriched, well-drained soil that is moderately yet consistently moist throughout the growing season. They appreciate mulched garden beds.

Do Hostas come back every year? Are Hostas a perennial plant?

With vigorous carefree growth, Hostas are herbaceous perennial plants that will return year after year with little maintenance.

What do you do with Hostas in the fall? What do you do with Hostas in the winter?

Hosta leaves will die back after frost but the crowns and roots remain intact and dormant until next spring. Prune back the leaves once they turn brown in the autumn and remove them from the plant's area. For winter protection, add a layer of compost or mulch over the crowns to protect them from the chill.

Do Hosta attract hummingbirds or pollinators?

Hostas are loved by pollinators and hummingbirds! All walks of beneficial pollinators will show up to sip their nectar.

Halcyon Hosta

My hosta was carefully packaged and arrived healthy. It is doing wonderful under my dogwood tree.

Appreciate your note on its healthy start. Keep soil evenly moist beneath the dogwood, clear spent leaves in autumn to deter slugs, and top-dress with compost each spring to maintain vigor.
