Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Want to go organic? Everyone is planting gardens, orchards, and making edible landscaping a hobby. Push out your chest with pride when it is harvest time and share your bounty with family and friends or open up your own roadside store! Horseradish Crowns (Armoracia rusticana) are considered an herb, condiment, stimulant, and an excellent source of vitamin C!

The leaves can be added to salads, soups, and as garnish - imparting their black pepper flavor and slight bite and heat to your recipes due to a volatile compound called isothiocyanate, but only when it has been crushed or ground. The small spikes of white flowers attract butterflies, but it is recommended to nip off any blooms so all the energy goes into the roots.

Very cold-hardy, these roots have been used since the days of ancient Greece and were worth their weight in gold! These are fast-growing and easy to care for! Horseradish contains an enzyme called peroxidase, which is extracted from the roots by the pharmaceutical industry for use by diabetics to test their blood sugar levels.

Planting and Application:

The peppery leaves are bright green and deeply lobed. Add these to your garden as a wonderful edible landscaping backdrop to your veggie and herb garden, or as a great border garden plant by your kitchen garden. Just put a few deep barriers into place to keep the roots from taking over.

Once harvested, scrub the roots, and pare off the outer coating. Cut the root into small pieces and pick out small dark spots and veins. The roots can be easily ground in a food processor. You may want to take this outside or in a well-ventilated area, as the fragrance will bring tears of joy to your eyes! Freeze some for future use or mix with vinegar for Horseradish spreads, garnish, and add some pep to meat dishes, soups, stews, and sauces!

  • Lush Edible Peppery Green Leaves
  • Excellent Source of Vitamin C
  • White Flower Spikes
  • Spicy Peppery Roots
  • An Easy to Grow Perennial Vegetable & Seasoning
  • Spreading Ornamental Edible

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Horseradish crowns are planted at least 6 inches deep or so. Once planted, your plant will grow and multiply for many years. If you live in USDA growing zones 4 - 6 you will be able to grow a decent root in a reasonable time. Under ideal growing conditions, a small piece of root planted in the spring can produce a usable root in the fall.

The roots should be dug only when the plant is not actively growing, preferably in the fall when the soil is dry but not yet frozen. These plants can spread and colonize an area but can become feisty and take over, so collar the roots or plant them in a pot with drainage into the ground to keep the roots better contained.

  • Full Sun
  • Deep Fertile Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate Moisture
  • Harvest After Frost
  • Prefers Cold Winters
