Picture-Perfect Fruit Honeoye Strawberry Plant

  • Large, Deep Red Berries
  • Sweet Strawberries
  • Stunning, Edible Groundcover
  • Excellent Container Plant
  • Versatile Landscaping Usage
  • Highly Productive
  • Ample Runners

When it comes to the world of strawberries, the Honeoye Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa 'Honeoye') is a celebrity. What makes this spectacular strawberry a star? Honeoye Strawberries are large, delicious, and impressively cold hardy.

Not only is this variety a treat for those that live in bitterly cold areas because it shrugs off the below-freezing temperatures, but it also produces an abundant yield of brilliantly red berries.

In fact, while these strawberry plants are widely adored throughout the home gardening community, they are especially beloved by gardeners in the most frigid U.S. zones like those in the Northeast and Midwest.

Honeoye strawberries are picture-perfect. They are deep red with a broad fruit form. These merry berries shine brightly out from the plant's medium green, peppy foliage. While these berries are striking, they also strike all the right notes in regard to flavor. They're sweet and juicy with a light floral scent.

Use your Honeoye strawberries to add sweet notes to your salads (they pair amazingly well with candied pecans, goat cheese, and lemon). These tasty berries also macerate well for a sweet treat with a bit of whipped cream or as an ice cream topping.

Add a fresh touch to your cheesecake with your Honeoye Strawberry harvest. Of course, you can use your strawberries to make scrumptious preserves that will extend the berry-picking season into fall and winter.

If you have little ones, you will keep them happy with plenty of Honeoye berries. You can even let your little ones pick their own strawberries or let them transplant runners into their own personal berry patch or strawberry container.

Just be sure your little ones are prepared for summer harvests because the Honeoye Strawberry is a June-bearer. If they're at summer camp during that time, don't worry--this reliable producer will push out strawberries for a long fruiting season.

Honeoye Strawberry plants are perky and grow a bit more upright and larger than most other varieties. In addition to its expressive form, this cultivar produces large, heart-shaped leaves with incised margins.

These broad leaves provide the garden with a lively appearance. These green leaves become even showier as winter arrives and the foliage reddens to a brilliant display

Naturally, the Honeoye Strawberry blooms before its fruit comes in. These sweet strawberry blooms create a charming display of five-petaled flowers with fuzzy honey-yellow centers.

These white flowers attract bees to the garden and, because this variety is a heavy producer, it will provide them with plenty of flowers to pollinate.

How to Use the Honeoye Strawberry in the Landscape

You do not need a lot of garden space to enjoy your own fresh Honeoye Strawberries. These delightful plants do well in containers, including vertical gardens, tiered planters, and hanging pots.

Honeoye Strawberry plants look lovely, dazzling brightly on the balcony or as a spiller in your vegetable container garden. One of our favorite ways we've seen these plants used is as a mailbox container planting.

Let the Honeoye Strawberry spread and fill in for a fun and fascinating groundcover. Over the course of a year or two, you'll find your Honeoye strawberries will produce plenty of healthy runners that will happily produce their own tasty berries. With these deep red berries and perky white flowers, you'll find you have one of the most attractive groundcovers in the neighborhood.

Add a unique flair to your front yard by using Honeoye Strawberry plants along your walkway. Guest will feel like they're walking in a strawberry wonderland as they arrive at your home.

It would be silly to not plant Honeoye Strawberries in your vegetable garden. Plant them in rows to make harvesting easier and keep runners from filling in too close to their source plants.

#ProPlantTips for Care

Honeoye Strawberry plants have a great reputation for their high yields, but they often wait until their second or third summer to reach their maximum production. To help yours reach their full potential, you can deadhead them in their first year and trim off rogue runners.

If you want to transplant your Honeoye Strawberry runner, wait until the runner develops roots--this is a clear indication that it can pull its own water and nutrients from the soil.

Honeoye Strawberries like full sun and rapid-draining soils. They thrive and produce larger fruit with even watering from spring until dormancy in fall. While they are cold hardy, a layer of mulch is a great way to protect your investment during winter.

Honeoye Strawberries are bright, sweet, and made to eat! These cheerful plants will provide you with plenty of fruit and fresh inspiration. Invest in a beautiful strawberry plant that will help your garden glow its brightest.
