Growing Zones 7-9
Your Dwarf Burford Holly (Ilex cornuta 'Dwarf Burford') is a broadleaf evergreen with ornamental features and one of the most popular Holly varieties available. Its emerald-green new growth blends majestically with the darker green of the mature foliage and stand-out in coloring among other common broad-leaf evergreen shrubs.
Also known as 'Burfordii Nana', Dwarf Burford has a compact, mounded habit and is very easy to care for. Clusters of petite, pristine-white flowers appear in spring and attract loads of beneficial pollinators, and later give way to small, burgundy-red, berry-like fruit. Its fall fruit adds additional drama to the luster of the foliage! Even without a pollenizer, you can count on this Holly's large, scarlet berries brightening your winter landscape, and the birds will adore it as well! Enjoy the decorative advantages of the fall fruit that persist until winter, and having another Ilex cornuta pollinator planted nearby will certainly allow your Holly to bear heavier!
Dwarf Burford Holly also has the advantage of being a bit less prickly than some other Holly choices. Each leaf reaches a graceful point, but not quite as extreme as other varieties, so if you choose to do some pruning, you won't have to worry about getting scratched up.
Planting and Application:
Lovely as both an accent or low hedge, this vibrant shrub is sure to provide year-round interest in your yard. There are several Holly varieties to choose from, but Dwarf Burford Holly is certainly one of the finest! Apart from its exceptional, decorative qualities and hardy nature, Burford Holly is small enough to enjoy even if you have limited space.
Use a Dwarf Burford to fill in an unsightly space in the garden, anchor a garden bed, and add verdant, broad-leaf evergreen color as backdrops and focal points throughout the garden! Plant some as a lovely hedge along your home or even place one in a large container on your patio. You'll love the privacy and sense of peace you will attain when surrounded by walls of greenery!
- Glossy Broad-Leaf Evergreen Shrub
- Fragrant Spring Flowers
- Produces Red Fruit Without The Need For a Pollinator
- Pollinator & Bird-Friendly!
- Works Well in Containers, Hedges, Property Definition & Specimens
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Dwarf Burford loves full sun and even tolerates partial shade in the hottest of its favored USDA growing zones 7 to 9. This vigorous plant adapts to most soil types as long as it drains well. Water regularly to establish new plants in your landscape. Once their roots are growing nicely in your soil, they are able to tolerate drier conditions. Provide 3-4 inches of arborist mulch to help insulate the root system and hold in moisture better.
Burford Holly hedges can be pruned at just about any time during the growing season. However, keep in mind that the small white flowers and bright red fruit are born on last year's growth. So you may want to wait until after the plants are done flowering, so they can set fruit for you in the fall.
- Full Sun & Partial Shade
- Widely Adaptable
- Any Very Well-Drained Soil Type
- Prune After Flowering
- Low Maintenance & Great for Urban Settings
