Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes

Growing Zones 8-10
The vibrant Pineapple Sage (Salvia elegans) is an ornamental herb that is so versatile in the landscape and kitchen! The crushed green leaves and scarlet-red flowers have the juicy smell of pineapple! The attractive, bright red blooms are long, tubes that are attractive to Hummingbirds. All herbs, Pineapple Sage included, are butterfly and pollinator-friendly as well!
The edible flowers have a sweet, fruity flavor with a hint of mint and spice. They of course smell like pineapple when crushed! The red tubular flowers emerge in summer and rebloom until autumn. Just as fragrant as the foliage, these will grow to shrub size in a single growing season. Pineapple Sage is a tall, open-branched, light, and airy growing habit.
Like most Mints, Perennial Sage, also known as Meadow Sage, has square stems with fragrant leaves. Pineapple Sage has bright green, long, and slender foliage on a tough semi-woody, herbaceous easy-to-grow shrub. Perennial in warmer growing zones 8-10, Pineapple Sage will act as a gorgeous annual accent in cooler climates.
Planting and Application:
Brushing or bruising the foliage of Pineapple Sage really does smell like fresh pineapple! As does the amazing, fragrant blooms. Be sure to plant this lovely herb where you can touch or brush past it often to release the scent into the air! Even in cut flower arrangements!
Pineapple Sages make a stunning thriller in containers and planters. They are a lovely specimen plant in borders and of course a prominent addition to the kitchen and herb garden! Plant anywhere because its open, airy structure will not shade out other plantings. The bright verdant foliage and large flower spikes of bold red blooms really make Pineapple Sage stand out in the perennial garden. No pollinator garden should be without!
Pineapple Perennial Sage is widely grown as a fast-growing, sun-loving annual that really beefs up the back of your annual borders or containers! Often grown as an annual in Northern gardens, colder climates can cut Pineapple Sage back and dig it up in autumn to overwinter indoors or treat it as an annual, to spruce up patio planters and vegetable gardens!
The fragrance may lead one to wonder if Pineapple Sage is edible… and indeed it is! The leaves of the Pineapple Sage plant may be steeped for teas and the minty-tasting blossoms can be used as an attractive and colorful garnish for salads, fruit salads, drinks, and desserts. Leaves are best used fresh. Crush a few fragrant leaves into hot or iced tea for a flavorful, cooling treat. Pineapple Sage flowers may also be used in jelly and jam concoctions, use dried leaves in potpourri, the uses are limited only by the imagination!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Pineapple Perennial Salvia prefers a full sun location, although also does well in part shade, especially in hot growing zones. Performing amazing in Southern climates with morning sun and afternoon shade. Provide regular water for new plants, and plant in a moist, well-drained soil location. Salvia are xeric plants and only need supplemental moisture during extended heat and drought.
Those in more Northern zones may plant in a protected location, use it as an accent, or bring it indoors into a bright indirectly sunny window, and top-dress with a 3-4 inch layer of mulch in winter to protect the crown from the dangers of frost. Because these are not truly winter-hardy, you will need to bring in Pineapple Sage during winters in zones colder than growing zone 8.
Not particular on soil type, Sage does best in rich soil, as long as it does not get soggy. Any well-drained soil and bright location and your Pineapple Sage will reward you with bountiful bright-red blooms and juicy fragrance!
Salvia is a woody herbaceous perennial that looks best if the mounds of greenery are cut back in the late winter or early spring. Keep those bold blooms popping until fall with regular deadheading. These clumping perennials appreciate being divided every 3-5 years to keep them blooming and growing vigorously.
- Full Sun to Part Shade
- Plant in Sharply Drained Soil
- Moderate to Low Moisture Needs
- Prune Back Late Winter or Early Spring
- Deadhead To Encourage New Blooms Spring til Fall
- Easy to Grow Plants & Deer Tend to Leave Them Alone
