Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Some shrubs work really hard in your garden! These workhorse and bones of the landscape can sometimes be so durable and un-attention-seeking, they fade into the background. The Hancock Coralberry (Symphoricarpos x chenaultii 'Hancock') is one of them! But Nature Hills is here to bring this beauty back into the forefront of attention!

Hancock has a truly unique growing shape that provides lovely stretches of low-growing deep blue-green groundcover you'll appreciate from your lawn chair! Shining in the sun or part shade, this plant displays dense, prostate masses of tiny dark green leaves.

This dwarf hybrid is a Snowberry variety that thrives throughout USDA hardiness zones 5 to 7 and only grows about 2-3 feet in height. But these gorgeous mat-forming deciduous shrubs can spread to an amazing 6 to 8 feet wide! The bell-shaped pink blooms appear in clusters and feed pollinators galore! Like its Coralberry cousins though, Hancock forms bunches of cute pinkish-coral berries that persist until the autumn and winter months!

Planting and Application:

These mat-forming living groundcovers are fantastic garden filler! Fill in the spaces between larger plants, trees, and shrubs with a living carpet of greenery! Let Hancock meander as it grows as a low element around trees as skirts, or as the fronts of hedges as facer shrubs, or as garden bed edging to tidy up the transition between lawn and plot.

Plant Hancock 4-5 feet apart on a hard-to-mow slope, or hillside that is eroding to create a pretty accent berm in place of an eyesore! Plant en masse or in a checkerboard pattern for faster fill.

Let this lovely shrub spill out over the edges of planters and porch containers, or over the tops of retaining walls! Hancock rambles over the stones of Rock Gardens and other low hardscapes in a pretty manner! The dense growth doesn't root where it touches the ground unlike other Snowberry but does form compact thickets that wildlife loves!

The flowers feed pollinators and the songbirds with these lovely flowering bushes! The berry-laden winter stems may be cut for indoor floral arrangements. Snip a few stems for bouquets as either greenery or to enjoy the bubble-like berries! The berries persist into winter providing excellent color and interest.

  • Dark Blue-Green Compact Little Foliage
  • Mounding Creeping Ornamental Stems
  • Low-Growing Carpet-Like Form
  • Pink Summer Blooms & Pink Fall Berries
  • Living Groundcovers, Spillers, Erosion Control & Container Accents

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Hancock Coralberry is easily grown in full sun in cooler climates, but afternoon and part shade average, medium wet, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. It will tolerate a wide range of soils but new installation and all shrubs appreciate a 3-4 inch thick layer of arborist bark chips. These are highly adaptable and moderate growers for easy, low-maintenance care! Blooming on new wood, prune in the very early spring before new growth emerges, or renewal prune by cutting out a third of the oldest, fattest, and least productive branches from the base of the plant.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Blooms On New Wood - Prune Early Spring When Dormant
  • Moderate Moisture Needs
  • Spring, Fall & Winter Interest
  • Appreciates Mulched Beds

For a low-growing Coralberry fills in the right spots of your landscape, choose the Hancock Coralberry bush from Nature Hills!
