Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Hall Avocados require full sun, meaning at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. While they can survive in partial shade, you will see significantly fewer fruits and a much thinner canopy if they do not get enough light.
  • Soil: These trees need loose, well draining soil to avoid root rot, which is their biggest enemy. If you have heavy clay, plant your tree on a slight mound or in a raised bed to ensure water moves away from the root ball.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water your tree deeply two to three times a week to help the roots settle into their new home. Once established, the Hall Avocado is quite drought tolerant, but inconsistent watering during fruit set can cause the tree to drop its crop prematurely. Aim for deep, infrequent soakings rather than light daily sprinkles to encourage deep root growth.

Pruning Tips

Since avocados bloom on the previous season's growth, known as old wood, you should prune immediately after you harvest the fruit in late fall or winter. Think of pruning like a light haircut to manage the height and open up the center of the tree for better airflow. Removing the vertical suckers helps the tree redirect its energy into producing those large, buttery avocados instead of just leaves.

Fertilizer Needs

Use a balanced citrus or avocado fertilizer three times a year in early spring, mid summer, and early autumn. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the fall because this triggers soft, new growth that can be easily damaged by a sudden cold snap. Stick to organic blends when possible to keep the soil biology healthy and the fruit flavor at its peak.
