Green Mountain Boxwood: Elegance Meets Practical Versatility

Green Mountain Boxwood (Buxus x 'Green Mountain') is a broadleaf evergreen known for its lush, bright green foliage and distinct pyramidal shape. Perfect for year-round interest, this upright shrub adds timeless sophistication to formal landscapes and modern gardens alike

The tiny flowers appear in spring, but they aren't showy, however, your local pollinators will seek out the vital nectar source. These Boxwoods are cold-hardy, versatile, and easy to grow, not requiring much maintenance to keep them looking spiffy!

The natural upright habit makes Green Mountain an ideal candidate to train and shear into a thick and dense hedge for privacy. Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 5 to 8, growing 3 - 5 tall and 2 - 3 feet wide at the base.

Why Choose Green Mountain Boxwood?

  • Distinct Shape: Naturally upright and pyramidal, perfect for vertical accents.
  • Year-Round Greenery: Retains its vibrant color even in harsh winters.
  • Low Maintenance: Requires minimal care while maintaining a refined appearance.
  • Cold Hardy: Thrives in USDA Zones 5–9, standing up to winter winds.
  • Versatile Landscaping: Ideal for hedges, accents, garden gates, or container displays.

Green Mountain Boxwood FAQs

Can Green Mountain Boxwood grow in full shade?

While it prefers partial to full sun, it can tolerate some shade but may grow more slowly.

Is Green Mountain Boxwood deer-resistant?

Yes, this variety is highly deer-resistant, making it an excellent choice for gardens in deer-prone areas.

Can I grow Green Mountain Boxwood in a container?

Absolutely! Its compact size and elegant form make it perfect for pots and planters.

OutStanding evergreen plant

I have had this guy for 5 to 6 years, and it has almost tripled in size. It sits in full sun, and gets all the nasty weather it can handle, from winters tumultuous ups and downs to the nice mid summers rainfalls, not to mention the hard stuff that summer sometimes brings with it. I planted it where one of my rose bushes had previously been, but apparently I did not remove all of the rose root systems, where I have now growing up and through the Green Boxwood. I have other boxwoods, but this one has out done all of the others thrice over. I have not ever fertilized it, and I do tend to forget about it, but it has shown that without a little TLC, it can survive and continue to grow.

Hello Randall,

Thank you so much for sharing your fantastic experience with your Green Boxwood! We’re thrilled to hear how well it’s thrived in such variable conditions—and it sounds like it’s become quite the resilient star in your garden. Your story about the rose roots intertwining is fascinating, and we appreciate your detailed observations. Indeed, boxwoods are wonderful evergreen survivors, especially when given full sun and natural weather exposure like yours.

Since your Green Boxwood has grown vigorously without fertilization, you might consider a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring if you want to give it an extra boost for next season, but as you’ve proven, this cultivar certainly knows how to hang tough with minimal intervention. Also, regular inspections for pests like boxwood leafminer could keep your planting healthy for years to come.

Thank you again for trusting Nature Hills with your garden; your testimonial brings us great joy!

Rooting for your garden’s success,

Hello Randall,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your wonderful experience with the Green Boxwood! It’s truly inspiring to hear how yours has thrived for 5 to 6 years outdoors, braving a variety of weather conditions and even robustly growing around those rose roots. Your story perfectly highlights just how resilient and adaptable this evergreen can be—especially when planted in a spot with full sun, just like you've done.

It’s impressive that even without fertilization or extra TLC, your Green Boxwood has outperformed others by such a margin! If you ever decide to give it a little boost, a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring can further enhance its growth and vitality, although as you’ve shown, this plant truly often does just fine on its own. Also, keeping an eye on the intertwined roots might be something to consider if you notice any slowdown in growth over time. We’d be happy to provide personalized advice for managing intertwining roots or recommending fertilizer options should you want them.

Your patience with it and satisfaction really do mean a lot to us. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any other questions or plants you’d like help caring for—your green thumb’s journey is one we love supporting!
