Growing Zones 4-9
Not everyone likes green flowers, but some of us absolutely adore these unique blooms! The Green Beauty Milkweed (Asclepias 'Green Beauty') has lovely sea foam green flowers that arrive in huge rounded clusters of densely-packed star-shaped blooms! Each with pinkish-purple centers and loads of nectar! That's if you can see them through the swarms of bees, butterflies and hungry beneficial pollinators that will arrive in droves to these blooms. After all, they don't care what color your Milkweed flowers are!
The thick, fleshy leaves are a bit of a darker green and form on strong stems to hold these blooms aloft for maximum Monarch butterfly attraction! After all, these are among those Milkweeds that are the Host Plant for their larvae!
Green Beauty Milkweed is a common wildflower in prairies and pasture, and it blooms from late spring through until mid-summer! Sometimes known as Spider Milkweed (don't worry it doesn't attract spiders!), this native beauty is a hardy herbaceous perennial throughout USDA growing zones 4-9, growing 24-36 inches tall and 12-16 inches wide.
Planting and Application:
Green Beauty looks great in Rain Gardens, native plantings and among wildflowers! Plant with your pollinator garden plants and in your cut flower garden for unique blooms that benefit all! The seed pods that form are great for crafts and for spreading more native Milkweed! We're sure you'll love the greenery top to bottom that accents every other plant in your garden!
Milkweed plants are very easy to grow and low maintenance! Create groupings and drifts for maximum color impact and effect on your Monarch butterfly populations! Make your pesticide-free wildflower or prairie planting a Monarch Waystation by planting fragrant, nectar-rich flowers that bloom from early spring until frost!
- Big Round Fragrant Clusters of Green Stars
- Curious Pinkish-Lavender Centers
- Loads of Nectar for Pollinators!
- Monarch Butterfly Host Plant
- Great Prairie, Wildflower, Rain Garden & Landscape Beds & Borders
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Milkweed plants love a full sun location, but they can tolerate some afternoon shade. This is perfect for any yard location and is adaptable to all soil types. They like well-drained soil but can tolerate moist soils and wet soils. They need good moisture to survive! They aren't a fan of drying out in the summer heat. They are known for growing in average-moist soil, this is definitely an easy plant! When you first plant it, this is the most crucial time to water it consistently so it can establish itself in its new location.
After the first growing season, they just need deep, but not regular watering. Water when it needs it! They aren't in need of mulch unless planted in a very hot area. In those situations, they are a fan of gravel mulches, as they do best with these, but any mulch will help conserve moisture! This is, overall, a low-maintenance plant! You'll love the life and color it brings to your yard with minimal effort! Prune in very early spring if necessary. You can cut off any damaged stems to ensure a gorgeous bloom in a few months! Naturalized plants like this aren't in need of a food source, so fertilizer isn't needed!
