Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This papyrus thrives in full sun, requiring at least six hours of direct light to maintain its sturdy, upright stems. While it can handle partial shade, less sun will result in a "floppier" habit and fewer of the iconic sparkler-like flower heads.
  • Soil: Prince Tut loves "wet feet" and performs best in rich, organic soils that stay consistently moist. For heavy clay or sandy soils, incorporate compost to help retain moisture, or simply plant it directly in a water feature or pond margin where the root ball is submerged under up to six inches of water.

Watering Requirements

During the first few weeks after planting, keep the soil saturated to ensure the root system anchors properly. Once established, this plant has zero drought tolerance and must never be allowed to dry out completely. If the soil becomes dry, the stems will quickly turn brown and crispy, as the plant lacks the ability to bounce back from a lack of hydration like a typical grass.

Pruning Tips

Because this plant does not bloom on wood but rather sends up new stalks from the base, pruning is mostly for aesthetics. Simply snip off any yellowing or dead stems at the soil line whenever they appear to keep the plant looking fresh and to encourage new growth from the center. Think of it like deadheading a flower; removing the old, tired stalks allows the plant to funnel all its energy into the vibrant new "pompoms."

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every two to four weeks during the peak growing season to support its rapid growth rate. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this can stimulate soft, tender growth that is easily damaged by the first dip in temperature. Maintaining a consistent nutrient schedule ensures the stems remain thick and strong enough to support the heavy seed heads.

Graceful plumes downsized for modern gardens! Introducing the Graceful Grasses® Prince Tut™ Dwarf Egyptian Papyrus (Cyperus papyrus 'Prince Tut') is a small-sized water garden plant that thrives as either an annual in cooler climates and an aquatic perennial feature in warm growing zones. Lovely green tufted tops and sturdy stems rise above the water, or other plants they're planted amongst.

Forming multiple stems with wild, vivid-treen tufts of fine-textured stems that erupt into a shower of thin green stems that can bloom through the summer, adding to the unique texture! Much smaller than the standard Papyrus, Dwarf Prince Tut™ reaches a tidy 2-3 feet tall and wide.

Dwarf Papyrus loves moisture and water, so include it in water gardens anywhere on your porch, patio or garden bed. Hardy in USDA growing zones 10-11, these are often annuals in colder, Dwarf Papyrus are tall green accents and verdant backdrops!
