Gooseberry is not a common fruit in America and that's a shame! Fresh Gooseberries are a real treat! They have a taste that can be sour grape-y, or like fresh apples or plums, or like tropical fruit, depending on when you harvest them. Among Gooseberries, the Pixwell Gooseberry (Ribes 'Pixwell') is a top performer!

Pixwell is a handsome shrub from spring to fall all on its own, but it is made all the more valuable because it provides delectable, edible fruit from July to September. The longer you wait, the sweeter they become. Pick them green or be patient and wait while they change from red to plum-colored. Most often they are picked right between the green and red stages when they are nice and firm.

Once fully ripe, use the juicy berries in beverages and desserts, as well as being made into preserves, chutneys and sauces! Green fruits are often used for sweet-tart wine, pies and preserves that hold their shape after being baked.

Planting and Application:

It has a spring bloom of flowers that you probably won't notice. However, bees and butterflies certainly will, making this plant a valuable asset to your yard's wildlife in the spring as well as in the fall. Plant in rows or groupings to not only boost pollination and your harvest but also provide habitat for birds and wildlife and calls pollinators galore!

Tall enough for great privacy and living fences that neighbors won't mind, or as rows along your home's foundation as an accent row and edible landscaping borders, backdrops and property division. Pixwell looks great planted in a group, along a fence, or planted as a single spotlight in your garden. Plant around your entertaining areas for a unique conversation starter! Enclose your kitchen and herb gardens with juicy healthy berries!

  • Nutritious Goose Berries
  • Mid-Sized Shrubs & Handsome Green Lobed Foliage
  • Great for Pollinators & Beneficial To Wildlife
  • Nearly Thornless
  • Edible Berries For Pies & Preserves

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Your Pixwell Gooseberry will love a sunny spot in your landscape. Provide at least 6 hours of direct light a day. Plant in an enriched, well-drained location with a good layer of mulch over the soils surface to protect the root system. It's almost thornless, mildew resistant and easy to prune when dormant.

  • Full Sun
  • Moderately Moist Soil
  • Well-Drained Fertile Location
  • Very Cold Hardy & Mildew Resistant
  • Prune While Dormant

Gooseberries have been prized for generations, and this variety will be an outstanding asset to your garden and kitchen pantry. The more plants you buy, the more fruit you'll have! Order yours today from NatureHills.com

I prefer to call it, "Angrest" Name used in Poland or slavic nations.

It's a European shrub that almost everyone is growing. Mid to northern Europe, to my knowledge. Unfortunately not all the owners can enjoy them, as children with the undercover of the night like to sneak in to the gardens and eat all the fruit from the shrubs. Strawberries also, I did it. :) Just like the description says it has many flavors. I bought two plants, to grow them in Burbank IL, I will see how well they will do here, it maybe little too hot for them and humid in summer. But under a tree they should do well. Yes, it is trim able and many times it is supported as it likes to lean down it's heavier branches. Note, it can tolerate wet soil for weeks. As in Europe its normal to have light rain for one or two weeks and then sun for 3 or 4 days. Totally different then in USA. As clouds move West to east in EU, and in USA Clouds move South to North, in comparison. They will grow in any garden soil. Once rooted well, do not need fertilization. Just keep weeds from growing under them and in between branches as it is not a dense shrub. Additional info, we grew them in Carpathian mountains above 2 km above see. Snow is not a problem or cold temperature during the night. Average temperature there is 60F to 70 in summer. You can also propagate it by digging in the soil one of the longest branches, it will after some time grow roots, once it has done it, you can cut the branch and you will have a new plant. Can't wait for the summer, and finally taste the fruit, it has been so many long years!

Hello Sebastian,

Thank you so much for sharing your rich and insightful experience with the Pixwell Gooseberry Bush! We truly appreciate your detailed observations, especially the cultural nuances and growing tips you provided from Europe. It’s wonderful to hear about how historically common and resilient this shrub is, along with your strategy for planting it in the shaded coolness under a tree in Burbank—you're absolutely right, that should help it thrive during hot, humid summers.

We also love your practical propagation tip by layering longer branches—it’s a natural and effective method to expand your plantings, which is so valuable for anyone looking to grow more without starting from seed. And your note about protecting fruit from nighttime 'thieves' had us chuckling; kids and cravings certainly go hand in hand regardless of continent or climate!

If you haven’t already, you might find it useful to install some light garden screening or natural deterrents to protect your harvest, such as using lavender or other aromatic herbs, which can discourage hungry visitors non-intrusively. Additionally, routinely cleaning up fallen fruit and pruning can aid overall might boost berry quality and size.

We're excited for you as you approach your first full growing season and can’t wait to hear how you enjoy the uniquely flavored berries fresh from your garden. If you ever need tips on pruning, managing the shrub during the heatwaves, or even recipe ideas for Gooseberry fruit, feel free to reach out!

Happy growing, Sebastian, and thank you once again for bringing this international perspective to our community.

Hi Sebastian,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful insights and experiences with the Pixwell Gooseberry Bush! We truly appreciate the thorough information you provided, especially your playful note about nighttime fruit 'thieves'—it brought a smile to our faces. It's fascinating to hear about how well these shrubs thrive in the Carpathian Mountains and their resilience despite chilly nights and snowy conditions.

Your observations about soil and watering needs, as well as pruning and propagation tips, are incredibly useful and leave no doubt that you know this plant well. Planting your gooseberry bushes under a tree in Burbank is a great idea to help them cope with the warm, humid summers common to the Midwest climate.

To protect your bushes from any little “visitors,” you might consider garden netting or even some ceramic animal sculptures as subtle deterrents. If you're growing alongside strawberries, planting companion flowers like marigolds might help create a healthy, pest-free environment.

If you want to explore propagation further, seasonally selecting branching tips with containing energy sometimes yields the most vigorous new bushes.

Thank you again for your detailed feedback and enthusiasm—we can’t wait to hear how your plants do and look forward to tasting that juicy summer harvest through your updates!
