Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 4-9
The trick with growing Grasses is that you have to know what size and form you're growing, or you'll end up with the wrong plant in the wrong place, and many people misjudge just how tall grasses can grow. With the beautiful Gold Dew Tufted Hair Grass (Dechampsia cespitosa 'Goldtau') you get a highly ornamental but compact plant that packs a big punch in a little space!
Gold Dew is a cool-season ornamental grass that has very dark green leaves and blooms a little later than other grasses, but when it blooms it is covered in golden inflorescences that dance, shine, and sparkle in your garden and are well worth the wait! You'll love the effect the plumes and dried blades have on the winter garden!
Wonderfully hardy and vigorous throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 9, Tufted Hair Grasses are neat and tidy on their own, growing low and compact at 12-24 inches tall when in bloom and spreading to a 24-30 inch mound. Delightfully easy to grow, even the newest green thumbs can have success!
Planting and Application:
These naturally short plants are perfect for covering the 'feet' of bare-bottomed plants like tall Phlox or Bee Balm for a prairie garden effect. Interspersed throughout a wildflower garden or a modern take on a prairie. Or try them around Roses for a modern take on the classic Cottage garden. Long a staple of riotous English cottage borders and calm Japanese tea gardens alike!
Xeric once established, Ornamental Grasses look fantastic among other Mediterranean and drought-tolerant plants such as Lavender, Coreopsis, and Coneflowers. If you want to really stop traffic, a mass planting along a walkway, along the sidewalk, or edging your driveway will do the trick.
- Deep Green Blades
- Golden Plumes!
- Four-Seasons of Interest
- Compact & Easy Care Cool-Season Grass
- Edging, Facer Plants, En Masse & Formal or Informal Garden Use
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Full sun is best for this little heat lover. Burgundy Bunny Dwarf Fountain Grass also thrives in partial shade and most well-drained soil types. Low moisture use once established, xeric little grasses do appreciate extra moisture during the summer's heat and during extended drought. Keep your Burgundy Bunny Grass neat and tidy by trimming it in winter if needed and dividing it in spring. This warm-season grass should be cut to the ground each year in late winter or early spring before it starts to grow, and can be divided if the clump gets too large at that time.
- Thrives in Full Sun
- Adaptable to Many Well-Drained Soil Types
- Low Moisture Needs Once Established
- Divide Every 3-5 Years
- Prune Early Spring
