Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Plant your Canna in a spot that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sun daily. While they can survive in partial shade, you will notice the deep burgundy foliage looks duller and the vibrant red blooms will be much less frequent.
  • Soil: These plants love rich, "hungry" soil that holds onto moisture but doesn't stay swampy. If you have heavy clay, mix in plenty of compost to improve drainage, or if your soil is sandy, add peat moss to help the roots stay hydrated.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, keep the soil consistently moist like a wrung-out sponge to help the rhizomes establish. Once mature, Black Knight Cannas are surprisingly thirsty and will show stress through leaf-edge curling if they dry out. While they can handle short dry spells once established, consistent deep watering twice a week results in the most dramatic height and largest flower clusters.

Pruning Tips

Giant Black Knight Cannas bloom on new growth produced during the current season. Throughout the summer, you should "deadhead" by cutting faded flower stalks back to the next side bud to encourage more blooms. In late fall after the first frost turns the foliage brown, cut the entire plant down to about 4 inches above the ground to prepare it for winter dormancy or rhizome lifting.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as soon as you see the first purple spikes poking through the ground. Reapply every 4 to 6 weeks until mid-summer to fuel their rapid growth and heavy flowering. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the fall because this triggers soft, new growth that is easily damaged by the coming cold.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

During the growing season, keep these full-sun plants in moderately moist to almost wet enriched soil, that is always well-drained so they do not rot. It is also a good idea to ensure that Canna has a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch over the surface, especially in drier, hotter areas. Provide regular fertilizer and deadhead when blooming is done. Canna rhizomes are not frost-hardy and do need to be dug in the fall before they freeze. Keep them in a cool, frost-free area in a bag in a garage or shed.
