Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Ghost Lamium thrives in full to part shade, ideally receiving less than 4 hours of direct morning sun. While it can handle more light in cooler climates, too much afternoon sun will scorch the silver foliage and turn it a crispy brown.
  • Soil: This groundcover prefers moist, well drained soil rich in organic matter. If you have heavy clay that stays soggy, mix in some compost or fine wood chips to improve drainage and prevent crown rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water your Lamium twice a week to help the roots knit into the surrounding soil. Once the plant is established, it is surprisingly drought tolerant, though the leaves may wilt or the silver color may dull if it stays dry for too long. Aim to keep the soil consistently damp like a wrung out sponge to ensure the most vibrant leaf color and consistent purple blooms.

Pruning Tips

This plant primarily blooms on new growth, so you have plenty of flexibility with timing. If the stems start to look leggy or "stretched out" in midsummer, shear the entire plant back by half to encourage a fresh flush of tight, silvery foliage. Think of it like a haircut that removes split ends to make way for healthy, dense growth and a potential second round of flowers.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer once in early spring as soon as you see new green shoots appearing. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this encourages soft, tender growth that will likely be damaged by the first hard frost of winter. A simple top dressing of compost once a year is often all this vigorous grower needs to maintain its ghostly glow.

The silvery Ghost Lamium (Lamium maculatum 'Ghost'), also known as Spotted Deadnettle, is an evergreen perennial with outstanding ornamental foliage features! Each dainty leaf's silver hue stands out amid more commonly colored plantings, impossible to miss even amid tall, colorful plants.

The leaves have serrated edges and tiny veins that are highlighted with various shades of green with a silver sheen. The overall effect becomes a natural masterpiece in any setting! As if this weren't enough, Ghost Lamium produces a spring bloom of petite, butterfly-friendly purple blossoms that repeat throughout the summer. The effect of the tiny spots of lavender against the green-edged, silver leaves is breathtaking!

Your Ghost Lamium may be small in stature compared to other Lamium but retains a magnificent ornamental nature. Its foliage is the main attraction, with heart-shaped leaves as an adorable feature of this lush, evergreen perennial in mild winter climates, but are lovely herbaceous perennials in cooler climates throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 9.

Planting and Application:

Plant a few where you'd like an impressive groundcover, or use them for a stand-out edging plant along borders, in Cottage gardens, and Moon Gardens. It's quite hardy and a wonderful choice when you need something fast-growing or in areas where it's a bit shady or dry. It's deer-resistant and even bunnies will pass it by.

It's a plant you can put in place and will quickly spread out. It can be left to grow naturally, or you can trim it back in winter for a neater appearance! There are very few perennials with the exquisite color and texture of Ghost Lamium!

Not only is it an incredibly beautiful groundcover, but is also terrific at choking back weeds wherever it's planted. Ghost Lamium has amazing color and texture, perfect for your yard, but also in a container planting on your patio, or as a spiller in shaded urns and planters.

  • Pretty Purple Flowering Spires
  • Shades of Green With Silver Overlay
  • Toothy Heart-Shaped Foliage
  • Re-Blooming Evergreen/Perennial
  • Great for Containers & Pollinators
  • Spreading Groundcover, Filler, Edging & Pretty Accents

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Ghost Deadnettle is such an easy-to-grow herbaceous perennial! It tolerates dry shade better than most plants once it gets established. Plant in any well-drained soil with regular moisture access during its establishment period, but can handle itself once it is settled. It loves to spread but is easy to keep in bounds with a little bit of trimming. It likes to get a good hard mow-down in late winter, too. It comes back beautifully in the spring to thrill you all year. Prune and clean the mounds in the early spring before new growth emerges. Lamium is low-maintenance, deer-resistant, and adaptable!

  • Partial Shade & Full Shade
  • Almost Any Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate to Low Moisture Once Established
  • Deadhead For Rebloom & Prune Early Spring
  • Deer Resistant Perennials

If you're seeking a uniquely colorful groundcover and spiller that maintains some color even during the winter months, Ghost Lamium is the perennial for you this year!
