The delightfully flavorful and ornamental French Improved European Prune Tree (Prunus 'French Improved') is a late-season Prune Plum that is medium-sized, and long oval-shaped with a glaucous dark purplish-plum skin. Featuring a sweet, mild-flavored flesh, the juicy interiors are a bright orange-apricot color with a freestone pit.

A rich flavored prune, French Improved is very sweet when fully ripe! It's ideal for fresh eating, drying, or baking! Before you see fruit though, you'll enjoy those fragrant white blossoms in the spring that will be abuzz with bees and butterflies.

Ripening in late July to mid-August, this Prune Tree is productive and a regular bearer and is a vigorous and cold-hardy tree! Thriving in growing zones 5 through 9, they're healthy and beautiful and they store for a long time when dried as winter treats! This Plum is considered partially self-fertile that will produce best when planted with another European variety like another French Improved Plum tree, or the French Petite European, or Green Gage Plum.

Planting and Application:

Traditionally used in French orchards as both specimens and windbreaks that produce delightful fruit, you can easily find a place for this incredible fruit tree in your landscape! Plant with its pollinator for an extended and varied harvest of healthy treats while boosting productivity on each tree.

Tall and wide enough to not overtake your yard but to shade spots nicely, these are highly ornamental trees that pull double-duty in the landscape! Plum Tree Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for French Improved European Plum Trees to bear fruit?

Nature Hills Nursery sells fruit trees with mature root systems that are already three to four years old, so you'll enjoy fruit sooner than you would with younger trees! Expect young Plum trees to begin fruiting usually by the 2nd to 4th year after they establish in your landscape.

How big do French Improved European Plum trees grow? How fast do Plum trees grow?

The French Improved European Plum tree can grow to a mature height of 15-25 feet and a mature width of 12-15 inches.

Once your Plum tree has been established (after the first year), it can typically add 13-24 inches of new growth per growing season. If your plants are growing less than that in a season, it may be worth your while to check the fertility level.

Where is the best place to plant French Improved European Plum Trees?

Plum trees grow best in well-drained, fertile soil in at least 6 hours of full sun per day or more. Provide good air circulation and moderate, yet consistent water in well-drained, fertile soil.

Do You Need 2 Plum Trees to Produce Fruit?

The French Improved European Plum trees are self-fertile, so planting more than one Plum tree that blooms at about the same time, boosts yields on both trees and extends your harvest time!

This plum is considered partially self-fertile that will produce best when planted with another European variety like another French improved, a French Petite, or a Green Gage Bavay's Plum.

No room? Look into High-Density Planting techniques, or choose a semi-dwarf or dwarf fruit tree.

When Should French Improved European Plum Tree be Planted?

Bareroot Plum trees can be planted in spring when they are available in your area. Container-grown Plum trees can be very successfully transplanted all throughout the growing season. Check for the first and last frost dates for your area with your local County Extension Office.

  • Plant bareroot Plum trees in the early spring.
  • Plant container-grown trees anytime the ground is not frozen by digging a hole as deep as the soil line and twice as wide.
