The Fraser Fir (Abies fraseri) is a tall Fir tree that has short dark-green needles with silver undersides. With its compact, pyramidal shape, and long-lasting aroma, it has become one of the classier conifers! Fraser Fir is a medium-sized, dense evergreen tree has wood that is light, soft; not strong and coarse-grained.

With dense needles that form in short spiked bottlebrushes all over the entire stem. Featuring a lovely green hue, the stems become accented with small colorful young cones that develop into long, finely scaled dangling brown cones by autumn.

It has continued to edge out all other species by major retailers because of its endurance, marketability, and functionality. It is grown extensively for Christmas trees in North Carolina, where it is ranked as the number one Christmas tree by the Christmas tree industry!

Planting and Application:

Because of this density and compactness, Fraser Fir is a great ornamental and Christmas tree. The Fraser Fir has soft needles, incomparable needle retention, a long-lasting aroma, and strong branches for even the heaviest ornaments! Don't take too many branches for crafts and winter décor, because you'll want to keep the to-the-ground privacy they provide! But if you do prune any of their limbs, you'll enjoy fragrant boughs for wreaths, bouquets and outdoor planter decorations.

These are iconic front yard specimen trees and provide incredible focal points and eye-catching features for your landscape! These trees are a boon to songbirds and wildlife! The dense branching is safe haven and protection from the elements for a wide range of bird species. Fraser Firs will protect you and your home as well by way of becoming incredible windbreaks, shelterbelts and hold back drifting snows.

  • Gorgeous Green Evergreen Needles
  • Lasting Aroma
  • Popular Christmas Tree
  • Great Pyramidal Shape
  • Easy To Grow

#ProPlantTips for Care:

This Fir tree is relatively low-maintenance and usually looks its best without pruning, although it can take some pruning. It will grow in most locations but must have good drainage, does best in full sun to partial shade, prefers moist to wet soil, and has a strong preference for sandy, acidic soils. It thrives better when planted in a relatively sheltered location.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Well-Drained Sandy to Average Soil
  • Moderate Moisture & Low Once Established
  • Highly Adaptable
  • Prune Sparingly

The Fraser Fir tree is a classic evergreen that will add curb appeal and protection to you and your feathered friends! Hurry and order yours from NatureHills.com today to grace your property before they're gone!

What a tree

When I first moved into my house in northwestern Illinois in 2004, I noticed the fir, on the backside of my property. It was about 15 feet tall, straight, and totally gorgeous with amazing pine cones. I didnt know, nor did my parents, what kind of fir it was; at first I thought it was a Noble, but after a closer look at the cones I finally figured what it was. I will buy and plant more of these, its the most beautiful evergreen in my yard. I love it. Robins choose it to nest in all the time and I have bluebirds that choose to perch on its highest peak daily as they can view the entire yard.

Dear Writerdianalee,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful story and heartfelt appreciation of your Fraser Fir! It’s truly rewarding to hear how this stunning evergreen has become such a treasured part of your landscape—and knowing that it provides a home and vantage point for robins and bluebirds adds an enchanting touch to its beauty. The way you carefully identified your tree by its cones shows such thoughtful observation, and it’s great you’ve confirmed that special connection.

Since you’re considering planting more Fraser Firs, you might find that they thrive particularly well in northwestern Illinois due to their preference for cooler climates and well-drained soils. When planting additional trees, we recommend maintaining adequate spacing to allow their narrow profile room to grow upward footprint considerably over time. Mulching around the base can help retain moisture and protect their roots, especially during hot summers or chilly winters.

If you ever want personalized care tips or assistance with your planting plans, please reach out! We’d love to help keep your yard a haven for those delightful feathered visitors.
