Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 6-9
An excellent French variety, the Franquette English Walnut Tree(Juglans regia 'Franquette') adds a grand feature to your landscape! This tree comes out of winter dormancy later in the spring, which protects your crop from late spring frost damage. It is widely grown for that reason in areas that are susceptible to spring frosts.
With their symmetrical, oval canopies and broad branch structure, these feature wide, attractive leaves and bring a distinctive look to the landscape. Franquette is one of the most widely planted English Walnuts for commercial production. It produces delicious, sealed, thin-shelled nuts that are easy to harvest and process.
Adding edible nut trees to your property is a wonderful investment. You'll gain protein-rich, nutrient-dense edible nuts, and a lucrative lumber resource. Although they can be self-fertile, to ensure a good crop, plant with another Walnut variety. Excellent quality nuts are produced in clusters on the branch tips and ripen later in October.
Planting and Application:
This special variety works well in home landscapes! Double duty as both an edible crop and a lovely, large shade tree, you'll increase your food security and make your landscaping work hard to support your family. It's easy enough to add Franquette as an investment and legacy tree! Easy-care, Walnuts do produce juglone, but not as much as Black Walnuts. They rarely affect other, more sensitive plants.
Although partially self-pollinate, you'll enjoy the best crops with another variety nearby. Plant small groupings in open, sunny, well-drained areas. Try a loose triangle for a natural grove, varying the planting distance. This provides great shade and habitat for songbirds and wildlife too!
- Large Size, Thin-Shelled Nuts

- Large Shade Tree - Works Well in Home Landscapes

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant your trees in full sun for best results. They need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. The planting site needs well-drained soil. Plant on a hill, or create a raised bed to improve soil drainage. Provide a moderate amount of water on a regular basis until the tree is established, then it requires less watering.
- Full Sun
- Moderate Water & Well-Drained Soil
- Prune When Dormant
- Easy to Grow
- Shows Resistance to Blight
