In late winter, you will smell the Fragrant Valley Sweetbox (Sarcococca humilis 'Sarsid1') long before you see it. It helps to wake up the garden after the long winter. With its very strong Hyacinth-like scent, the Fragrant Valley Sweetbox is a perfect harbinger of spring!

This sweet little broadleaf evergreen shrub is much smaller than other Sweetbox shrubs, but it is a quick spreader to 3 feet across. It is densely covered in well-branched, deep green narrow-leaved foliage that gives it a finer texture than other Sweetbox and a lushly full look!

The flowers become red, bird-friendly berries that have added interest to your landscape! Sarcococca is very disease resistant and both deer and rabbits steer clear. It is easy to grow and easy to maintain!

Landscape Application:

Because the foliage is so pretty, Fragrant Valley is attractive year-round, but in late winter, when it is dotted with white blooms, it really sings in the shade garden. The blooms last for several weeks and perfume the whole landscape! Park your favorite reading chair or an entire seating area near a hedge of these shrubs for some added privacy too!

Fragrant Valley makes a grand statement when massed! We've seen beautiful ribbons of evergreen color under trees and in woodland gardens made of Fragrant Valley. Because of its low growth habit, it doesn't require any much pruning, either.

  • Hyacinth-Like Scented Winter/Early Spring Bloom
  • Glossy Slender Broadleaf Evergreen Foliage
  • Early Emerging Pollinator Friendly
  • Low-Growing Year-Round Greenery
  • Low Privacy, Hedges, & Dry Shade Tolerant Groundcover

#ProPlantTips for Care

Tolerant of full shade and partial shade locations throughout USDA planting zones 6 to 8. Fragrant Valley Sweetbox is a great plant for challenging areas like dry shade once established. Get your shrub on the right foot by planting it in a well-drained location with regular water their first year or so in the ground. Mulch around the root system supports the plant year-round. Prune your shrub after the flowers fade to keep your shrub tidy.

  • Full Shade to Partial Shade
  • Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate to Low Moisture Needs
  • Disease & Deer Resistant, Bird Friendly
  • Easy Care & Hardy

A fantastic low-growing evergreen for the shade! You will want to give this sweet Sweet Box a try in your garden this year. Order some Fragrant Valley from Nature Hills today!
