The wetland restoration superhero, Fox Sedge Grass (Carex vulpinoidea) is one of those rare plants that will grow as well in Florida as it does in New Hampshire, Arizona, Washington or even Arkansas! As a matter of fact, it is native to most of the contiguous United States. It even grows into southern Canada!
Do you know what that means? It means that we are positive that Fox Sedge will grow where you live! This super-hardy Sedge is a robust little native perennial (often an evergreen in warmer winter climates) and a workhorse in the garden!
The foliage is a lovely spring-green. In June the little grass-like tufts are topped with 5" bronzy inflorescence that darken to a deep-brown and resembles a Fox's tail jumping through a meadow.
Fine-textured, green slim grass blades create a rounded fountain-like clump in the garden. Accentuated with the short-lived, bronze seed heads, Fox Sedge is most well known for its wet soil tolerance and wetland habitat restoration use!
From early spring until autumn's frost, you'll enjoy steady blades of color swaying in the breeze! Summer brings bronzy, spiky seed-heads for added interest and motion in the wind. Great for USDA growing zones 3 through 8, this is a hardy little herbaceous perennial that can handle it all!
Planting and Application:
Easy-care perennials, Carex are low growing focal points and low maintenance interest for a wide variety of landscape applications. You won't find a better plant to help out in disturbed garden areas. Fox Sedge is often used in Wetland Restoration and erosion control. After disaster disturbance, Fox Sedge is often the first colonizer plant. That shows you how tough this little native perennial is!
They excel in drainage ditches and mitigation sites, bringing grace and texture and easy-care color to waste areas. Excellent soil stabilizers on shorelines, meadows and wildlife gardens. They are also highly deer resistant!
Sedges will lend great texture and movement to your landscape. It performs well in wet garden conditions like pond edges, drainage areas, garden low spots, or by the HVAC condensation drip. Plant a few in your Rain Garden or around a gravel feature at the end of your gutters.
Naturally colonizing an area, Fox Sedge looks right at home planted en masse or in swaths along waterfront areas, or as tousled edging along garden beds and pathways. The easy-care and low maintenance of Fox Sedge mean both commercial and residential areas make it feel right at home! The graceful, arching blades sweeping the path, lining walkways, are lovely as edging and facer plants, or look great spilling out of the sides of containers!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Sedges aren't true Grasses and prefer dappled partial shade but will grow well in full sun as long as it gets steady water, or afternoon shade. Plant grasses and Sedges in well-drained sites regardless if you are planting in a wet to moist site or average garden conditions. All plants prefer a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch around their roots, especially in drier conditions. Prune back this cool-season grass, or clean up their mounds in the early spring if needed.
- Full to Part Sun
