Flannel Bush. The name conjures up cozy shirts and crackling fires, sweet hot cocoa and melty s'mores. But the reality is that this vining shrub isn't like that at all. It is a super-drought-tolerant California native that sports some of the brightest yellow flowers you've ever seen every spring!

This fast grower will quickly become a massive focal point in your garden. It is perfect in xeric or Waterwise garden settings, too, as it requires no supplemental water at all after you initially water it when you plant it. As a matter of fact, lawn sprinklers will quickly kill it, so situate this heat lover where it can be properly neglected.

We've heard rumors that you can espalier Flannel Bush (Fremontodendron californicum) to run along a garden wall, but we'd advise you just let it do its thing. There's a good reason. Flannel bush comes armored.

The beautiful, ivy-like blue/green leaves have small hairs that are highly irritating to humans. (Animals don't seem bothered by them.) We strongly encourage you to wear goggles and gloves when you deal with a full-grown specimen.
