Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season

Growing Zones 3-8
This is a small Flame Amur Maple Tree (Acer ginnala) that has lovely spring flowers and a showy fall display! The Amur's charmingly fragrant scent heralds the spring each year, and you'll adore the clusters of dainty white-pale yellow flowers scattered among its branches.
The 3-inch leaves consisting of 3 lobes provide your tree with a vibrant bright green color throughout the summer. There's no doubt that you'll feel your anticipation rise as autumn approaches and your Amur spices up your yard with stunning shades of scarlet!
The seeds are a samara that begins with a reddish hue and turns a light tan. They appear as seeds with tiny wings that enchant the viewer with their gentle manner of helicoptering along on the autumn breeze.
One of the great things about this small deciduous Maple is that you can grow it as a small tree or even a shrub. It rises 15 - 20 feet with a spread of 15 - 28 feet and a lovely rounded crown. Cold-hardy throughout USDA planting zones 3 to 8, becoming a highly adaptable ornamental for your garden!
Landscape Application:
A colorful Amur Flame Maple would look spectacular planted along the street in front of your home! Park yours on a raised berm in your front yard or as a tidy row dividing your front yard from the street or a busy sidewalk.
There's no need for a lot of room to have this tree grace your home! A grouping becomes a bird-friendly hangout while rows of these trees become gorgeous hedges and property divisions, both as shrubs with their limbs to the ground or as trees with their lower limbs exposed.
It can be allowed to grow into a large shrub or pruned to a multi or single-stemmed small tree and it doesn't demand any special care or concern! You can even use the Flame Amur Maple as a container or patio tree!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Growing best in full sun and having the best color when planted in well-drained soil with regular moisture access. These are highly adaptable deciduous plants that can be kept as shrubs, or trained into a single or multi-trunked tree form. But wait until late winter or early spring to prune. A 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch around the roots keeps them stress-free!
- Full Sun
- Well-Drained Soil
- Moderate Moisture Needs - Drought Tolerant Once Established
- Prune In Late Winter
- Small Tree or Large Shrub With Training
